Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) and Ethiopia Officially Launch Conference on Public Health in Africa (CPHIA) 2026 to Advance Africa’s Health Security and Sovereignty Agenda

Source: APO – Report:

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) (http://www.AfricaCDC.org) and the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia officially launched the Conference on Public Health in Africa (CPHIA) 2026, the continent’s foremost public health gathering.

“The launch symbolises our determination to build a healthier and more resilient Africa, fully aligned with the aspirations of the African Union’s Agenda 2063,” said H.E. Ambassador Hadera Abera, State Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. “CPHIA 2026 is necessaryIt will help advance Africa from dependency to self-reliance, from vulnerability to resilience, and from fragmentation to coordinated continental action.”

The conference will take place in Addis Ababa from 23 to 27 November 2026, bringing together governments, scientists, policymakers, health professionals and partners to advance practical solutions for Africa’s health transformation and help shape the future of public health on the continent.

Held under the theme Africa’s Health Security and Sovereignty: Transformation from health dependency and vulnerability to ownership and resilience,” CPHIA 2026 will provide a strategic continental platform to advance Africa-led solutions, strengthen resilient health systems, and accelerate implementation of the Africa Health Security and Sovereignty agenda.

“This platform provides an opportunity to influence evidence-based policy and shape strategies that will define the health security of Africa’s 55 AU Member States,” said Dr Raj Tajudeen, Acting Deputy Director General, Africa CDC. He noted that while the inaugural edition of CPHIA in December 2021 attracted 2,500 participants, CPHIA 2026 is targeting 30,000.

CPHIA 2026 aligns with the Africa Health Security and Sovereignty (AHSS) agenda, recently adopted by the 39th ordinary session of the African Union Assembly. It builds on the CPHIA 2025 continental commitments outlined in the Durban Promise (http://apo-opa.co/4u7zO8w), which calls for mobilising Africa’s wealth and innovation for health sovereignty, strengthening governance and accountability, reinvesting in primary health care and community systems, and fostering regional solidarity and market efficiency, among other priorities.

CPHIA (https://CPHIA2021.com), the flagship conference of Africa CDC and AU member states, is a unique annual event that connects political leaders, policy makers, private sector and community actors with scientists and programme implementers. It provides an important opportunity for African stakeholders to engage in open dialogue on critical health issues, share new scientific breakthroughs and innovations, and identify solutions with the potential to catalyse positive change.

Africa CDC has convened four previous editions of CPHIA, each strengthening its position as the continent’s leading forum for public health dialogue, policy alignment and scientific exchange. Hosting CPHIA 2026 in Addis Ababa reinforces Ethiopia’s position as a major diplomatic hub, home to the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, the African Union and its agencies, including Africa CDC, among other global institutions.

“We are proud to partner with Africa CDC to convene this significant gathering,” said H.E. Ambassador Hadera. We will continue working closely with Africa CDC to ensure the successful hosting of CPHIA 2026 in Addis Ababa,” added Dr Tajudeen.

Tau emphasises importance of transformation of SA’s economy

The Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Parks Tau, says the transformation of the South African economy is critical and that there is no room for apology in pursuing it.

Tau made these remarks during a meeting with the Royal Chancellor of the Zulu Nation, Inkosi Malusi Zondi and the Royal Economic Council in Richards Bay on Friday.

The meeting discussed, amongst other matters, government s interventions on Tongaat Hullet, ArcelorMittal, developments in the Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone and the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition’s (dtic) Incentive Schemes, with a particular focus on the Transformation Fund and the Black Industrialists Programme.

The Transformation Fund is expected to mobilise R100 billion that will be aggregated over the five-year term of the current administration through a joint effort between government and the private sector.

It will serve as a funding platform wherein inclusive growth is engineered through data, innovation, and partnership, ultimately unleashing the country’s full potential. The Black Industrialists Programme is designed to accelerate the participation of black-owned businesses in the industrial economy.

Tau highlighted government’s commitment to efforts to save Tongaat Hulett (THL) operations. He said the operations needed to continue or else it would collapse the strategic agro-processing asset, and liquidation, unfortunately, threatens the entire downstream and upstream value chain, which would cause devastating economic impact.

“It is in everyone’s best interest to intervene and find sustainable solutions. We believe that Tongaat can be saved, and we must do everything within our means to ensure its recovery, while also safeguarding public funds. Our investments must be deliberate and purposeful. Above all, we remain committed to putting our people first in every effort we undertake,” said Tau.

In addition, Tau said a R200 million financial support package, facilitated through the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), has been provided as a lifeline intervention.

The funding is intended to sustain operations and prevent immediate collapse, enabling THL to continue operating until at least the end of June 2026. This intervention is aimed at preserving value in the business while a longer-term solution is pursued.

“The date set by the courts provides an opportunity for all parties to come together and find common ground, guided by a commitment to putting people first.

“On the same note, government is committed to the efforts of saving ArcelorMittal in Newcastle. The view is that it is possible to find partners, and the offer has been made to buy back the operation,” Tau said.

Tau said his department was committed to working with the Zulu Nation and other stakeholders to make sure the province fully participate in the economic activities across all sectors. He added that continuous engagements would take place to make this a reality.

The Royal Chancellor of the Zulu Nation, Inkosi Malusi Zondi, welcomed Tau’s commitment and underscored the importance of saving both Tongaat Hullet and ArcelorMittal.

“We are fully committed to the empowerment as Kings, and to participate fully in the economy. We remain committed to support efforts that will bring new investors and retaining the current ones for the benefit of our people,” he said.

Additionally, Nkosi Zondi welcomed and supported efforts to stop the liquidation of Tongaat, as it will affect small-scale growers.

Furthermore, he said there was a need for further engagement on the way forward, should the court rule in favour of the liquidation, as this would destabilise more than one million rural livelihoods and trigger immediate non-payment to growers and suppliers.

Tau was accompanied by senior officials of the dtic, including Director-General Simphiwe Hamilton, Acting Deputy Director-General of Sectors, Dr Tebogo Makube and the Acting Deputy Director-General of Incentives, Justice Ngwenya.

DPSA notes GEMS contribution adjustment

Public Service and Administration Minister, Inkosi Mzamo Buthelezi, has noted the recent announcements by the Government Employees Medical Scheme (GEMS) and organised labour regarding the adjustment of the 2026 contribution increase.

The Minister said that the period leading up to this outcome was characterised by intensive engagements and, at times, a clear impasse between the scheme and organised labour.

“On the one hand, GEMS was required to uphold its fiduciary responsibility to ensure the long-term financial sustainability of the scheme. On the other hand, organised labour raised legitimate and urgent concerns regarding affordability and the immediate financial pressures facing public servants,” the Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA) said in a statement on Friday.

The department said these positions, while valid, resulted in a deadlock that required deliberate and structured intervention. Recognising the potential impact on public servants and the broader stability of the scheme, the Minister, in his capacity as the employer representative, undertook a series of facilitated engagements with GEMS and organised labour.

“These engagements were aimed at ensuring that neither sustainability considerations nor affordability concerns were pursued in isolation, but rather balanced in a manner that protects both the scheme and its members.

“Through this process, the Ministry worked to create a platform for constructive and solution-oriented dialogue, ensure that the concerns of workers were meaningfully ventilated and considered, and encourage the scheme to re-examine its position within a broader socio-economic context,” the DPSA said.

The Minister was encouraged that the engagements had culminated in a revised weighted contribution increase of 7.5%, reflecting movement from the initial position of 9.5% and providing measurable relief to members.

“It is important to underscore that this outcome was not the result of a single process or perspective prevailing over another, but rather the product of facilitated convergence between parties whose positions had, at one point, significantly diverged.

“The Ministry believes that this outcome demonstrates the value of active employer involvement in complex socio-economic matters, particularly where the interests of public servants, institutional sustainability, and public confidence intersect.

“At the same time, the Minister acknowledges that the issues raised during this period, including affordability, governance, cost drivers, and transparency, remain matters requiring ongoing engagement and careful oversight,” the department said.

In addition, the DPSA will continue to work with all stakeholders to ensure that these matters are addressed in a structured and sustainable manner.

The Minister further emphasises that engagement between GEMS and organised labour must continue to evolve towards a more proactive, transparent, and collaborative model to prevent similar situations in the future.

The department said it remains committed to safeguarding the interests of public servants while ensuring that institutions such as GEMS remain financially sound, responsive, and aligned to their founding mandate.

The Minister thanked all stakeholders for their participation in the engagements and urged continued cooperation in the interest of public servants and their families. – SAnews.gov.za

Trio arrested for alleged possession of precious metals

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed the arrest of two senior officers and a civilian, allegedly linked to the illegal dealing and unlawful possession of precious metals.

The arrests were effected over the weekend by the team who executed a J50 warrant of arrest.

“The suspects were arrested following investigations into allegations of illicit precious metals transactions, corruption, and related offences. These arrests form part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement to dismantle criminal networks involved in the illicit trade of precious minerals and corruption,” the SAPS said in a statement on Sunday.

The suspects are expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Monday, facing charges that may include the unlawful dealing in precious metals, defeating the ends of justice, corruption, and contravention of applicable legislation regulating precious metals. – SAnews.gov.za

 Finance Minister engages Joburg Mayor

 Finance Minister engages Joburg Mayor

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has met with the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Dada Morero, to discuss serious concerns the National Treasury has raised regarding the City’s finances.

“These concerns relate to financial sustainability and compliance with the Municipal Finance Management Act, 2003 (MFMA) by the metropolitan municipality.

“In terms of its constitutional and statutory mandate, National Treasury exercises oversight over the financial affairs of municipalities and is obligated to act where it observes material risks to fiscal sustainability and compliance with the legislative framework governing public finances,” the Ministry of Finance said in a statement.

The meeting was part of the natural and regular oversight and engagement activities undertaken by the Minister and the National Treasury, and follows a confidential letter recently leaked to the media that Godongwana had sent to Mayor Morero, calling for the engagement.

“The meeting on Friday between Minister Godongwana and Mayor Morero, and their respective teams of officials and technical experts, was robust and productive.

The engagements are ongoing and are being treated with the urgency that they merit, and while Minister Godongwana fully accepts the public interest in the matters, it would not be appropriate to detail the full scope of those discussions at this time,” said the Ministry.

The Minister has assured residents of Johannesburg that the National Treasury continues to pursue a constructive resolution to the issues that are in the interests of service delivery and financial sustainability.

Describing the meeting as “productive,” Godongwana said Mayor Morero has agreed that he and his officials must go back and consider some serious remedial actions to address the issues raised.

“They will soon submit a formal report to the Treasury in response to the letter that I sent,” said Godongwana. –SAnews.gov.za

The two sides discussed cooperation between the State of Qatar and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and explored ways to further strengthen ties.

He said such efforts were necessary to reach a sustainable agreement that would prevent renewed escalation in the region.

Qatar Urges International Community to Confront Repeated Israeli Violations

Source: Government of Qatar

New York, May 9, 2026

The State of Qatar stressed the need for the international community to fulfill its responsibilities in confronting repeated Israeli violations and implementing relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, including Resolutions 2334 and 2803. It also reaffirmed its support for efforts aimed at achieving a just and comprehensive peace, as well as its steadfast backing for the Palestinian cause and the resilience of the Palestinian people, based on international legitimacy and the two-state solution, including the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The remarks came in the statement of the State of Qatar delivered by HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, during an Arria-formula meeting of the Security Council on the situation in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. The meeting was organized by the United Kingdom, the French Republic, the Kingdom of Denmark, the Hellenic Republic, and the Republic of Latvia at the UN headquarters in New York.

Her Excellency said the meeting came at a timely moment to highlight the ongoing escalation in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, despite efforts to achieve peace and end the war in the Gaza Strip through the comprehensive plan proposed by HE President of the United States Donald Trump.

Her Excellency said the settlement activities were illegal and constituted a flagrant violation of international law, Security Council resolutions and the 2024 advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice.

In that context, HE Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations expressed the country’s condemnation of the Israeli occupation’s decision to designate land in the occupied West Bank as so-called “state land,” and its rejection of all measures aimed at altering the demographic composition, character and legal status of the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem.

She stressed that such measures constitute an assault on the viability of a Palestinian state and on the implementation of the two-state solution, and undermine ongoing efforts to achieve peace and stability, including the 20-point plan on Gaza.

Her Excellency also added that the State of Qatar condemned the incursions into the Aqsa Mosque compound by Israeli officials and settlers and the raising of the Israeli flag within its courtyards, describing the actions as a flagrant violation of international law and a provocation to Muslims around the world. She underscored the need to preserve the existing legal and historical status quo in Jerusalem and its Islamic and Christian holy sites.

Her Excellency also noted Qatar’s condemnation of the escalating violence by settlers against Palestinians, including recent attacks on schools and Palestinian children, calling for accountability for those responsible for these violations.
