Premier Ramathuba welcomes national disaster classification

Limpopo Premier, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, has welcomed the classification of the recent floods that affected Limpopo and several other provinces as a national disaster, saying the move will unlock much-needed support to assist with recovery and rebuilding efforts. 

The classification was issued by the National Disaster Management Centre, following an assessment of the magnitude and severity of the severe weather conditions experienced across Limpopo, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape and the North West. 

The severe weather included lightning, strong and damaging surface winds, heavy rainfall and flooding, which resulted in loss of life, extensive damage to property, infrastructure and the environment, as well as disruptions to basic services. 

The disaster was classified in terms of Section 23(1)(b) of the Disaster Management Act, 2002 (Act No. 57 of 2002). Ramathuba said the classification comes at a critical time, as the full extent of the damage is becoming clearer and access to previously cut-off areas is gradually being restored. 

“This classification has come at the right time when the extent of the damage to our infrastructure is becoming visible to all and access to some areas is slowly opening. We need all the assistance we can get to rebuild Limpopo after these devastating floods, and the help we need from national departments and agencies would be made possible through this classification,” Ramathuba said. 

The national disaster classification will enable organs of State across all three spheres of government to strengthen their support to disaster management structures, implement contingency arrangements and ensure coordinated interventions to effectively address the impact of the disaster. 

The Premier said the Limpopo Provincial Government is currently engaged in assessing and quantifying the damage across affected areas, including determining the cost of repairs and compiling the required reports to be submitted to the National Disaster Management Centre for consideration, assistance and approval. 

Government has reiterated its commitment to working with all relevant stakeholders to provide relief to affected communities and to fast-track recovery and rebuilding efforts across the province. – SAnews.gov.za

Government declares national disaster over flooding, severe weather

The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Velenkosini Hlabisa, has welcomed the declaration of a National Disaster under Section 23 of the Disaster Management Act of 2002 (Act No. 57 of 2002) due to severe weather conditions and widespread flooding affecting various parts of the country.

This classification was initiated by the Head of the National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC), Dr Elias Sithole, following consultations with the relevant government entities and Heads of Provincial Disaster Management Centres through the National Joint Flood Coordinating Committee.

“This followed a comprehensive assessment of adverse weather conditions experienced since late November 2025,” the statement read. 

The severe weather, which included heavy rainfall, strong winds, lightning and flooding, impacted Limpopo, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape and the North West. 

This extreme weather resulted in loss of life, significant damage to infrastructure and property, environmental degradation, the displacement of communities, disruptions to schooling and agricultural activities, and closures in parts of the Kruger National Park.

Mpumalanga has recorded 20 fatalities, with over 1 300 houses, roads, and public infrastructure damaged. The death toll in Limpopo stands at 18.

Further rainfall warnings remain in effect. 

The classification follows an oversight visit by President Cyril Ramaphosa to Limpopo last week. 

Hlabisa visited Mpumalanga on Friday, 17 January, to assess flood-affected areas and witness the scale of devastation firsthand.

Hlabisa commended the provincial leadership for its swift and coordinated response, emphasising that decisive leadership is critical in safeguarding lives and strengthening community resilience during disasters. 

He emphasised the urgent need for intervention, including mobilising sufficient resources to support relief and recovery efforts. 

Following the classification, according to Section 26, in conjunction with Section 23 of the Disaster Management Act, the National Executive takes on the primary responsibility for coordinating and managing the National Disaster.

“Accordingly, all organs of State across the three spheres of government are required to strengthen support to disaster management structures, implement contingency measures, submit progress reports to the NDMC, and ensure a coordinated, multi-sectoral approach to prevention, mitigation, relief and rehabilitation.” 

Hlabisa reaffirmed government’s commitment to restoring normalcy and rebuilding affected areas, with a focus on creating more resilient infrastructure. 

He expressed appreciation for the first responders, disaster management teams, the South African Police Service, the South African National Defence Force, and humanitarian organisations such as Gift of the Givers. 

The Minister also acknowledged the communities that demonstrated Ubuntu by supporting those affected.

Foot-and-mouth disease

Due to the ongoing rainfall, wildfires in the Western Cape, and the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), Hlabisa emphasised the need for collective action. 

On 17 January 2026, he convened a meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee on Disaster Management (ICDM), where they agreed on immediate intervention measures and additional support.

The Minister conveyed his deepest condolences to families and communities affected by the loss of life and urged residents to remain vigilant, heed warnings, avoid unnecessary travel and prioritise safety. 

Response and recovery efforts will continue to be coordinated to ensure that assistance reaches all affected communities.

Limpopo urges road users to exercise caution following flooding in Mopani and Vhembe

The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety has urged motorists, pedestrians and all road users to exercise extreme caution when travelling, particularly near low-lying bridges and flooded roads, following flooding incidents reported in parts of the Mopani and Vhembe Districts. 

In a statement on Sunday, the department said persistent heavy rainfall in the affected areas has resulted in dangerous road conditions, with reports of flooding-related incidents and loss of lives. 

According to the department, distressing reports have been received of people losing their lives after attempting to cross flooded streams, rivers and bridges. The adverse weather conditions have rendered certain roads unsafe and significantly increased the risk of fatal accidents. 

MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Violet Mathye, expressed concern over the situation and appealed to road users to avoid taking unnecessary risks. 

“We are deeply concerned about the loss of lives reported in Mopani and Vhembe. We urge motorists and pedestrians to refrain from crossing flooded roads and low-lying bridges. No destination is worth a human life. Floodwaters are unpredictable and can easily sweep away both people and vehicles,” Mathye said.

The MEC also called on communities to cooperate with traffic officers, law enforcement agencies and disaster management teams that have been deployed across the province to monitor the situation and assist where necessary. 

The department advised road users to avoid crossing flooded roads and low-lying bridges, even when water appears shallow, and to obey road closure signs as well as instructions from traffic officials.

Motorists are further encouraged to use alternative routes where available, reduce speed and maintain safe following distances during wet and rainy conditions. Special caution has been urged to ensure the safety of pedestrians and learners, particularly in flood-prone areas. 

Traffic officers and disaster management teams remain on high alert and continue to monitor road conditions across the affected districts. 

The department extended its sincere condolences to the families affected by the recent tragic incidents and reiterated its call for vigilance and responsible road use during adverse weather conditions.

À la veille de la finale de la Coupe d’Afrique des Nations (CAN), Speak Up Africa (www.SpeakUpAfrica.org) a réuni à Rabat des dirigeants du football, décideurs politiques, partenaires mondiaux de la santé, athlètes, jeunes, médias et acteurs de la société civile, à l’occasion du lancement de Speak Up Africa en Action, sa nouvelle plateforme phare de « sport pour la santé », conçue pour accélérer l’éradication de la polio et l’élimination du paludisme sur l’ensemble du continent.

Organisée en marge de la CAN, cette activation s’est tenue à un moment critique pour la santé publique. Alors que la volatilité des financements, la multiplication des crises mondiales et le recul de la confiance des populations menacent les progrès durement acquis, Speak Up Africa en Action vise à transformer la portée et l’influence du sport en engagement politique durable, en mobilisation des populations et en actions concrètes.

Conçue comme une plateforme itinérante et récurrente, intégrée aux grands rendez-vous sportifs et culturels, Speak Up Africa en Action combine dialogue de haut niveau, storytelling immersif, engagement des athlètes et participation des jeunes. Son ambition est de renforcer un leadership sanitaire porté par l’Afrique, de consolider la confiance et de faire en sorte que l’élan généré sur le terrain se traduise par des résultats tangibles au sein des communautés.

Kick Out Polio : accélérer la phase finale de l’éradication

L’un des axes centraux de l’activation à la CAN était la campagne Kick Out Polio, mise en œuvre en partenariat avec l’Initiative globale pour l’éradication de la polio (Global Polio Eradication Initiative). Bien que l’Afrique ait été certifiée exempte de poliovirus sauvage en 2020, des flambées de poliovirus variants persistent dans plusieurs pays, rendant la phase finale de l’éradication à la fois complexe et urgente.

S’appuyant sur les valeurs du football, esprit d’équipe, discipline et responsabilité partagée, la campagne appelle les gouvernements, les familles et les communautés à veiller à ce que chaque enfant soit vacciné. Des champions du football et des figures culturelles prêtent leur voix pour renforcer l’engagement politique, garantir un financement prévisible et consolider la confiance du public dans la vaccination.

« Le sport parle une langue que tout le monde comprend », a déclaré Fatma Samoura, ancienne Secrétaire générale de la FIFA. « Il unit les personnes au-delà des frontières, des générations et des communautés. Lorsque nous mobilisons cette force au service de la santé publique, en particulier dans la dernière ligne droite de l’éradication de la polio, nous créons une dynamique que les institutions seules ne peuvent pas générer. Speak Up Africa en Action montre comment le football peut toucher les cœurs, renforcer la confiance et contribuer à protéger la vie et l’avenir des enfants d’Afrique. »

Zéro Palu Football Club : maintenir le leadership et l’élan

L’activation a également mis en lumière le Zéro Palu Football Club, une alliance de figures du football reconnues à l’échelle mondiale, mobilisant leadership et visibilité pour soutenir l’élimination du paludisme en Afrique. Lancée en avril 2023 par les légendes du football Luís Figo et Khalilou Fadiga, l’initiative soutient le mouvement « Zéro Palu ! Je m’engage », porté par la Commission de l’Union africaine et le Partenariat RBM pour en finir avec le paludisme.

Le paludisme demeure l’une des maladies les plus meurtrières en Afrique, tout en étant largement évitable, et touche de manière disproportionnée les enfants de moins de cinq ans. Dans un contexte de diminution des financements internationaux, le Zéro Palu Football Club constitue un outil essentiel de plaidoyer et de mobilisation, alliant champions, décideurs et partenaires afin de maintenir la volonté politique et de mobiliser des ressources.

« Le football a toujours été une question d’esprit d’équipe, de discipline et de capacité à aller au bout de ce que l’on commence », a déclaré Luís Figo, ancien footballeur international et co-capitaine du Zéro Palu Football Club. « C’est un match que nous pouvons, et que nous devons gagner. »

Des grands rendez-vous à un impact durable

Dans le cadre de l’activation à la CAN, Speak Up Africa a également signé un protocole d’accord avec Tibu Africa, une organisation panafricaine de premier plan qui mobilise le sport pour promouvoir l’éducation, l’inclusion sociale et le développement communautaire. Ce partenariat reflète l’engagement de Speak Up Africa en Action à ancrer le plaidoyer dans une action de long terme, portée par les communautés.

En unissant leurs forces, Speak Up Africa et Tibu Africa approfondiront l’engagement communautaire, mobiliseront le sport pour renforcer la confiance et déploieront des initiatives conjointes visant à accélérer l’éradication de la polio et l’élimination du paludisme, en étroite collaboration avec les acteurs locaux.

Tout au long de l’événement, les intervenants ont souligné la responsabilité, et l’opportunité, pour les institutions du football de contribuer à la santé publique, à un moment où l’unité et la confiance sont plus essentielles que jamais.

« Le football n’est pas seulement un sport, c’est une responsabilité sociale assortie de fortes obligations sociétales », a déclaré Hicham El Amrani, expert du football et ancien Secrétaire général de la CAF. « En s’appuyant sur sa force de rassemblement, les fédérations et les institutions du football ont le devoir de protéger les enfants et les communautés et d’investir dans leur bien-être. L’édition CAN marque le lancement officiel de Speak Up Africa en Action en tant que plateforme récurrente, appelée à se déployer tout au long du calendrier sportif, à renforcer les partenariats, à amplifier les récits africains portés par l’Afrique elle-même et à accélérer les progrès sur les priorités de santé publique les plus urgentes du continent.

On the eve of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Final, Speak Up Africa (www.SpeakUpAfrica.org) convened football leaders, policymakers, global health partners, athletes, youth, media, and civil society in Rabat for the launch of Speak Up Africa in Action, its new flagship sport-for-health platform designed to accelerate polio eradication and malaria elimination across the continent.

Hosted alongside the AFCON tournament, the activation took place at a critical moment for public health. With funding volatility, competing global crises, and declining public trust threatening hard-won gains, Speak Up Africa in Action seeks to translate the reach and influence of sport into sustained political commitment, public engagement, and concrete action.

Conceived as a recurring, traveling platform embedded in major sporting and cultural moments, Speak Up Africa in Action combines high-level dialogue, immersive storytelling, athlete engagement, and youth participation. Its ambition is to elevate African-led health leadership, strengthen trust, and ensure that momentum generated on the pitch delivers results in communities.

“Africa has the leadership, credibility, and community trust needed to end polio and malaria,” said Yacine Djibo, Founder and Executive Director of Speak Up Africa. “Speak Up Africa in Action brings those strengths together, using the power of sport to reinforce trust, mobilize partners, and sustain momentum where it matters most.”

Kick Out Polio: accelerating the final phase of eradication

A central focus of the AFCON activation was the Kick Out Polio campaign, implemented in partnership with the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. While Africa was certified wild-polio-free in 2020, variant poliovirus outbreaks persist in several countries, making the final phase of eradication both complex and urgent.

Drawing on the values of football, teamwork, discipline, and shared responsibility, the campaign calls on governments, families, and communities to ensure every child is vaccinated. Football champions and cultural figures are lending their voices to reinforce political commitment, predictable financing, and public confidence in immunization.

“Sport speaks a language everyone understands,” said Fatma Samoura, former Secretary General of FIFA. “It unites people across borders, generations, and communities. When we harness that power for public health, especially in the final push to eradicate polio, we unlock momentum that institutions alone cannot generate. Speak Up Africa in Action shows how football can move hearts, build trust, and help protect the lives and futures of Africa’s children.”

Zero Malaria Football Club: sustaining leadership and momentum

The activation also spotlighted the Zero Malaria Football Club, an alliance of globally respected football figures mobilizing leadership and visibility to support malaria elimination across Africa. Launched in April 2023 by football legends Luís Figo and Khalilou Fadiga, the initiative supports the Zero Malaria Starts with Me movement led by the African Union Commission and the RBM Partnership to End Malaria.

Malaria remains one of Africa’s deadliest yet most preventable diseases, disproportionately affecting children under five. Against a backdrop of declining international financing, the Zero Malaria Football Club serves as a critical advocacy and mobilization tool, connecting champions, policymakers, and partners to sustain political will and unlock resources.

“Football has always been about teamwork, discipline, and finishing what we start,” said Luís Figo, former international footballer and co-captain of the Zero Malaria Football Club. “This is a match we can, and must, win.”

From major moments to lasting impact

As part of the AFCON activation, Speak Up Africa also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Tibu Africa, a leading pan-African organization using sport to advance education, social inclusion, and community development. The partnership reflects Speak Up Africa in Action’s commitment to anchoring advocacy in long-term, community-based action.

By joining forces, Speak Up Africa and Tibu Africa will deepen community engagement, harness sport to build trust, and roll out joint initiatives to accelerate polio eradication and malaria elimination in close collaboration with local actors.

Throughout the event, speakers emphasized the responsibility, and opportunity, of football institutions to contribute to public health at a time when unity and trust are more critical than ever.

“Football is not only a sport, it is a social responsibility with strong social obligations,” said Hicham El Amrani, Football Expert and former Secretary General of CAF. “Using its uniting force, Federations and football institutions have a duty to protect children and communities and invest in their wellbeing. By engaging in the fight against polio and malaria, football can place its credibility, reach, and values at the service of public health and help deliver victories that matters far beyond the pitch.”

Lançada em abril de 2023 pelas lendas do futebol Luís Figo e Khalilou Fadiga, a iniciativa apoia o movimento Zero Malaria Starts with Me (O Fim da Malária Começa Comigo), liderado pela Comissão da União Africana e pela Parceria RBM para o Fim da Malária.

A malária continua a ser uma das doenças mais mortais e mais evitáveis de África, afetando desproporcionadamente as crianças com menos de cinco anos. Num contexto de declínio do financiamento internacional, o Zero Malaria Football Club funciona como uma ferramenta fundamental de sensibilização e mobilização, ligando campeões, decisores políticos e parceiros para manter a vontade política e desbloquear recursos.

Joint Statement: His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamin bin Hamad Al Thani of Qatar and Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada Commit to Deepening Bilateral Engagement and Economic Cooperation

His Highness Tamin bin Hamad Al Thani, the Amir of Qatar and the Right Honourable Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada, met today in Doha to elevate bilateral ties and set clear priorities for increasing trade and investment. The meeting comes in the context of Prime Minister Carney’s visit to Qatar – a historic first visit by a sitting Canadian Prime Minister – emphasizing the shared commitment to promoting mutual prosperity, regional and international peace, stability, security, and a resilient multilateral system. 

Qatar and Canada enjoy a positive and growing partnership built on shared priorities, similar values, and mutual respect. Since establishing diplomatic relations over 50 years ago, our countries have been continuously working to deepen ties through high-level visits and agreements that advance cooperation in trade, defence, education, and international development. Recent milestones include a visit of HH the Amir of Qatar to Ottawa in September 2024, during which both sides signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) on development cooperation as well as annual political consultations and finalized expanded air transit arrangements, underscoring a commitment to closer dialogue and connectivity.

The Qatar-Canada relationship holds immense potential for growth. Prime Minister Carney’s visit has deepened bilateral relations through trade and investment, security, technology, mining, and agriculture. Both countries are committed to advancing shared objectives — Canada’s goal of trade and security diversification and Qatar’s Vision 2030 —that deliver economic benefits for both Canada and Qatar.

Today, we have marked a new chapter, one that will strengthen our ties and create new opportunities for cooperation in the years ahead, during which several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed in areas of cooperation that will pave the way for a strategic partnership through institutional frameworks that will sustain long-term and structured cooperation.

Qatar and Canada will elevate their bilateral consultations to a Foreign Ministers–level Strategic Dialogue, reflecting the growing strength of their relationship.

Both sides recognize the growing strategic relevance of the region and the value of deepening practical ties to support coordination. In this context, the two countries acknowledge ongoing Canadian efforts toward the establishment of a resident Defence Attaché presence in Doha and a broader set of cooperation initiatives including an intention to establish a defence, security and intelligence framework (including military training).

Looking ahead to the 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament co-hosted by Canada, the two sides signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) on Security Cooperation for the FIFA World Cup 2026 committing to strengthening security cooperation for the tournament, building on Qatar’s experience and success during the 2022 tournament.

Investment plays a critical role in advancing economic prosperity. Qatar affirms its commitment to make significant strategic investments in Canada’s nation building projects. Likewise, Canada commits to bringing a delegation of investors, including its major pension funds, to Qatar to explore opportunities for bilateral and joint investment.

Qatar and Canada further share a desire to establish a foundation for enhanced collaboration across key sectors in trade and investment, including mining, agriculture, telecommunications, information and communication technology, science, transportation, and other areas of mutual interest. To enable this, the two sides signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Joint Economic, Commercial and Technical Cooperation, establishing a Joint Economic Commission to augment bilateral economic ties.

Qatar and Canada have a shared commitment to leveraging innovation for global progress. Both countries are committed to building a strategic partnership that supports the ambitious growth and diversification objectives of Vision 2030, particularly in artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies. To further the bilateral partnership in this domain, the two sides sign a Memorandum of Understanding for Cooperation in the Field of Information Technology.

Recognizing the value of deepening economic ties and supporting expanded investment opportunities for Qatari and Canadian businesses, as well as reinforcing long-term growth in our bilateral commercial relationship, both sides commit to conclude negotiations on a Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA) in a timely fashion, with a view to signing the agreement in the summer of 2026. The two sides also agreed to commence negotiations on a Double Taxation Agreement (DTA).  The two countries further agreed to enter a negotiation phase on a Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation in the financial and economic fields, with a view to enhancing coordination, exchanging expertise, and strengthening institutional cooperation between the two countries.

Based on a shared understanding of the importance of bilateral air connectivity and its role in strengthening economic ties, Qatar and Canada affirmed their intention to further expand air services under the Qatar-Canada Air Transport Agreement.

This year marks Qatar’s Year of Culture with Canada which comes at a time when the strength of international relationships needs to be shaped by understanding. The 2026 Years of Culture offers an opportunity for Canada and Qatar to deepen people-to-people ties, strengthen cultural literacy, and invest in the soft-power foundations that support stability and dialogue. Through culture, creativity, and shared experience, this partnership can contribute to a more resilient and durable bilateral relationship as cultural exchange remains one of the most effective ways to build trust, reduce misperception, and create the conditions for long-term cooperation.

At the conclusion of the visit, the Right Honourable Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada expressed his sincere appreciation to HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Amir of Qatar for the warm welcome and generous hospitality that was extended during the visit. Prime Minister Carney further extended an invitation to HH the Amir to visit Canada and highlighted his confidence in a future marked by even deeper cooperation and prosperity, that is strengthened by mutual trust, close friendship, and a common vision for advancing the partnership between the two friendly nations.

Qatar Welcomes Ceasefire Agreement and Full Integration Between the Syrian Government and the Syrian Democratic Forces

The State of Qatar welcomes the ceasefire agreement and the full integration between the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces, considering it an important step toward strengthening civil peace, enhancing security and stability, and building a state based on institutions and the rule of law. In this context, Qatar commends the effective efforts of the friendly United States of America, which contributed to reaching this agreement.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirms that Syria’s stability and prosperity require the state’s exclusive control of weapons within a single national army representing all components of the Syrian people, in a manner that ensures the preservation of the country’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity.

The Ministry reiterates the State of Qatar’s full support for Syria’s sovereignty and unity, and for the aspirations of its brotherly people for freedom, development, and prosperity.

President El-Sisi Meets Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority

Today, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met with Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority Admiral Osama Rabie.

Spokesman for the Presidency Ambassador Mohamed El-Shennawy stated that President El-Sisi was briefed on navigation traffic in the Suez Canal. 

Admiral Rabie pointed out that during 2025, particularly in the second half of the year, the Canal witnessed a relative improvement and the beginning of a partial recovery in navigation traffic. This was in light of the efforts exerted to contain negative repercussions and enhance the competitive position of the waterway following the completion of the development of the southern sector. He further noted that the second half of the year saw the gradual return of large container ships to transit the Suez Canal.  This is a positive indicator toward the resumption of such vessels’ passage through the Canal once again, amid the return of stability to the Red Sea region. He reaffirmed expectations of a further improvement in Suez Canal revenues during the second half of 2026, as some shipping lines return to their normal levels by the end of the year.

President El-Sisi also followed up on the executive status of the development of the South Red Sea shipyard, to review completion rates and implementation timelines. These efforts are part of the strategy to localize the maritime industry and strengthen partnership with the private sector. 

In this regard,  Admiral Rabie highlighted the latest developments in the construction of 12 deep-sea fishing vessels, as well as the completion of the construction of 6 maritime tugboats as part of a series comprising 10 “Azm-class” tugboats with a 90-ton bollard pull. Additionally,  construction has been completed for another 10 maritime tugboats with an 80-tons bollard pull at the Suez Canal Authority’s shipyards. 

The Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority also reviewed the executive status of the Authority’s completion of the construction of 10 river buses, in addition to plans to purchase and develop the dredger fleet to boost the Authority’s capabilities.

The President emphasized, in this context, the necessity of meeting the needs of Egyptian ports for maritime tugboats and various marine units through the Authority’s fleet, as well as developing and modernizing the Egyptian fishing fleet. President El-Sisi gave directives to continue implementation of the strategy to develop the Suez Canal, its navigational channel, and all its facilities and infrastructure. This aims to maintain its globally recognized efficiency and capability, given its unique position in global navigation and trade.

World Health Organization (WHO) and European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) support training for Somalia’s health workers on new guidelines to protect children from malnutrition

In health facilities across Somalia, frontline health workers confront the same painful reality every day: children arriving too late, dangerously thin and already fighting for survival.

Acute malnutrition remains one of the country’s most persistent public health challenges, affecting children under-5, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and other vulnerable groups. In fragile and emergency settings, the difference between life and death often depends on how early a child is identified and how well health workers are equipped to respond.

To reinforce lifesaving nutrition services, the World Health Organization (WHO), in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health, is rolling out Somalia’s 2025 updated national guideline for the prevention and management of wasting and nutritional oedema – also known as acute malnutrition. The revised guideline aligns with the latest global evidence and places prevention and early intervention at the centre of care.

More than 40 Somali health professionals from hospitals and stabilization centres across the country recently gathered for a two-week master training-of-trainers course, supported by the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) and WHO. The aim was to equip the national trainers with the knowledge and skills needed to cascade high-quality, standardized nutrition care to health workers nationwide.

“The main goal of this training is to build the capacity of frontline health workers and nutrition programme managers to effectively implement the 2025 Somali Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM) guideline,” said Dr Aweis Olow Hassan, Nutrition Officer at WHO Somalia.

Unlike previous versions, the revised guideline goes beyond treatment alone. It emphasizes prevention, expands care for infants under 6 months who are at risk of poor growth and development, and includes guidance for their mothers and caregivers. It also introduces protocols for moderate wasting and a comprehensive chapter on nutrition in emergencies.

“This guideline reflects the realities health workers face every day,” Dr Aweis explained. “It helps them identify risks earlier and act before children become severely malnourished.”

For participants like Dr Maryan Musse, Health and Nutrition Project Coordinator at World Vision Somalia, the training addressed long-standing challenges encountered in the field.

“In our work, we often see limited community awareness about nutrition and differences in how standard protocols are applied across health facilities,” she said. “This training provided clear guidance on case management and will help me support health care workers more effectively.”

Dr Maryan now plans to cascade the training to all World Vision-supported health facilities under her supervision, ensuring consistency and quality of care.

Similarly, Bihi Omar Wehlie, Health and Nutrition Programme Officer for Concern Worldwide (UK), described the practical value of the updated guideline.                                          

“The training helped me understand the new structure of the guideline, especially the stronger focus on prevention,” he said. “The expanded guidance on managing nutritionally at-risk infants under 6 months, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and nutrition support for HIV and TB patients was particularly important.”

By training national trainers, WHO and Somalia’s Ministry of Health are investing in a sustainable system that strengthens Somalia’s health workforce from within.

“Developing a strong cohort of national trainers ensures knowledge can be continuously cascaded,” Dr Aweis noted. “This enhances service quality and improves child health outcomes across the country.”

But the responsibility does not stop at health facilities. Participants emphasized that communities and families play a crucial role in preventing malnutrition.

“My message to parents is simple,” said Bihi. “Seek care early. Prevention begins at home. The earlier we identify a problem, the stronger and healthier the child will be.”

Dr Maryan echoed the call, urging families to prioritize early breastfeeding, seek timely care and work closely with health workers to protect children and mothers from malnutrition.

As these trained health professionals return to their communities, they carry more than new guidelines – they carry renewed confidence, practical skills and a shared commitment to ensure that no child is left behind due to preventable malnutrition.
