Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio Chairs Virtual African Union (AU) C-10 Summit To Advance Africa’s Demand For United Nations (UN) Security Council Reform

Source: APO – Report:

.

His Excellency, President Dr, Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone has issued a resounding call for decisive action on United Nations Security Council reform, emphasizing Africa’s legitimate and long-overdue demand for permanent representation. Speaking at the Sixth Summit of the African Union Committee of Ten Heads of State and Government (C-10), which was held virtually on Friday, President Bio described the moment as a critical juncture in Africa’s two-decade-long push for equity and justice in global governance.

“As a continent historically excluded from the highest decision-making body on global peace and security, our call is not for charity but for fairness,” President Bio declared. “Africa will no longer accept marginalisation. The time to act is now.”

President Bio, who also serves as the C-10 Coordinator, recounted key milestones since the Fifth C-10 Summit in Equatorial Guinea and the adoption of the Oyala Plan of Action in February 2024. He highlighted progress made under Sierra Leone’s presidency of the UN Security Council in August 2024, including the first-ever high-level debate addressing Africa’s exclusion from permanent membership.

The President outlined the next phase of C-10’s advocacy, including the submission of the African Union Reform Model to the Intergovernmental Negotiations (IGN) process, a model that calls for no fewer than two permanent seats, with all rights, including the veto if it remains and two additional non-permanent seats for Africa.

“These are not symbolic developments, they are signals that the world is finally listening,” he said, referencing global acknowledgements like the UN Pact for the Future and a direct ministerial dialogue with the P5 during UNGA79.

President Bio stressed the importance of unity, coherence, and high-level engagement moving forward, especially ahead of the 80th UN General Assembly and the 20th anniversary of the Ezulwini Consensus and Sirte Declaration in September 2025.

“We must align our messaging, mobilise our partners, and continue to press for Africa’s rightful place in global governance. Our inclusion is not just a matter of justice, it enhances the legitimacy and effectiveness of the Security Council itself,” he said.

The summit concluded with a renewed commitment from C-10 leaders to advance the Common African Position and ensure Africa’s voice remains central in all global discussions on peace and security.

Egypt Participates in Drafting and Launching the G20 Development Working Group Ministerial Declaration

Source: APO – Report:

.

H.E. Dr. Rania A. Al-Mashat, Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation, represented the Arab Republic of Egypt at the G20 Development Working Group Ministerial Meeting held in South Africa.

She also participated in drafting and launching the Ministerial Declaration at the conclusion of the meetings.

The Ministerial Declaration, issued at the meetings, affirmed that development financing is at the core of shared priorities. It also highlighted the urgent need to enhance domestic resource mobilization, address illicit financial flows, and strengthen the role of multilateral and innovative financing mechanisms.

The G20 reaffirmed its commitment to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, its pledge to leave no one behind, and its enhanced shared responsibility in confronting global challenges and interconnected crises, from debt to global inequalities, climate change, and the SDG financing gap.

During her participation, H.E. Dr. Rania Al-Mashat highlighted Egypt’s experience in launching the “Country Approaches for Financing Sustainable Development and Climate Action” initiative within the Seville Platform for Action, with the aim of advancing integrated financing frameworks globally.

Egypt co-leads this initiative (alongside South Africa, the United Nations Development Programme, the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, UNICEF, regional development banks, and others).

Its objectives include 100 countries implementing integrated financing programs or country financing platforms funded by public, private, and philanthropic sources by 2030.

Egypt has already begun joint work with Mexico to understand the mechanism for designing and implementing national platforms.

Regarding stimulating large-scale investments, H.E. Dr. Al-Mashat emphasized the importance of allowing the private sector to play an effective role in development financing, improving governance in international financial institutions, and strengthening the United Nations’ role in setting global economic rules.

She also stressed the significance of debt sustainability and updating the basis for calculating Debt Sustainability Analysis (DSA) to ensure a fairer assessment for developing countries, particularly in Africa, and to support these countries with incentive tools and mechanisms to overcome ongoing debt challenges.

In line with the G20 ministers’ declaration, which highlights the urgent need to bridge the $4.5 trillion annual SDG financing gap, H.E. Dr. Al-Mashat affirmed the pressing need to expand blended finance and public-private partnerships, and to implement debt-for-development swap programs.

She pointed to Egypt’s experience, particularly with Italy, Germany, and China, in providing fiscal space for investment in high-impact projects in food security, women’s empowerment, environmental protection, and climate change, making it a successful and replicable model.

Furthermore, between 2020 and May 2025, Egypt successfully mobilized approximately $15.6 billion for private sector financing from international partners, with $4 billion allocated to the private sector within the Country Platform – the “NWFE” program.

Despite the absence of an internationally agreed definition for Global Public Goods, the G20 Ministerial Declaration stressed the urgent need to enable the provision of these goods, along with the importance of taking action to support low-income and developing countries in implementing the 2030 Agenda in accordance with their national priorities and contributing to global well-being. This is what the Development Working Group calls for: enhancing global consensus, research, and cooperation on the protection and provision of Global Public Goods.

The Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation reiterated in her speech that development financing and investments in essential sectors represent the cornerstone of sustainable economic and social growth and have a direct impact on human well-being and long-term productivity.

She confirmed the necessity of achieving a common vision in line with the G20 Ministerial Declaration, through mobilizing long-term and affordable financing and rethinking multilateral cooperation. With over $460 trillion in global assets, the potential to bridge SDG financing gaps is within reach – if countries redirect capital towards inclusive and sustainable priorities.

H.E. Dr. Al-Mashat concluded her speech by stating that the outcomes of this Ministerial Meeting must represent the beginning of a practical phase – to translate commitments into tangible progress, moving from policies to practices with strong political will, while ensuring that no country is left behind in our pursuit of a more sustainable and equitable future for all.

It is worth noting that the G20 is the premier forum for international economic cooperation and plays an important role in shaping and strengthening global architecture and governance on all major international economic issues. Its membership includes 19 countries plus the European Union and the African Union. South Africa assumed the G20 presidency from December 1, 2024, to November 2025, and is committed to leading the G20 by focusing on people, development, and solutions in a complex global geopolitical landscape.

This comes against the backdrop of Egypt’s pioneering experience – as a middle-income country – in balancing its national priorities.

West African advisers to boost agribusiness e-commerce

Source: APO – Report:

.

Small agribusinesses in Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire are eager to tap into regional markets, but limited digital skills and poor access to online platforms hold them back. Without targeted support, these businesses struggle to embrace e-commerce and expand beyond their local base.

To close this gap, the International Trade Centre trained national advisors and support institutions to help agribusinesses go digital and sell across borders.

Many small agribusinesses in West Africa face barriers to reaching broader markets due to poor digital skills, low online visibility, and little access to e-commerce. These challenges hold back their potential to scale and engage in regional trade.

To help close this gap, the International Trade Centre (ITC), under its ECOWAS Agricultural Trade (EAT) programme, organized a regional training of trainers in April in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. The five-day workshop brought together six newly appointed e-commerce advisors (three from each country) and eight representatives from business support organizations in Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire. They received the tools and knowledge to support 30 agribusinesses—15 in each country—to trade online across the region.

The participating advisors were selected for their potential to act as national champions for e-commerce capacity building. They were joined by eight representatives from four partner business support organizations: the National Association of Nigerian Traders (NANTS) and the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Côte d’Ivoire (CCI-CI) and the National Chamber of Agriculture of Côte d’Ivoire (CNA-CI). This diverse mix fostered strong cross-border peer learning and established the foundation for sustained collaboration between national institutions.

“In my view, agro-processors will need this hands-on training to increase their visibility,” said Ibrahima Bamba, Agricultural Advisor at the National Chamber of Agriculture of Côte d’Ivoire.

Anuoluwapo Odubanjo, e-commerce Advisor for Nigeria added: “Thanks to this training, I’m ready to support agribusinesses in developing tailored e-commerce strategies—from choosing the right platforms to managing online sales—so they can scale up their operations.”

The training covered digital marketing, online payment systems, shipping logistics, and customer service. Using interactive tools such as real-life case studies and peer learning, the sessions fostered collaboration and built confidence among participants.

The impact is evident: 11 participants reported a significant improvement in their skills, and many left with action plans to support small businesses in their communities. From training rural entrepreneurs to helping businesses list on e-commerce platforms, the new advisors are ready to make a tangible impact.

Since its launch in 2018, the programme has worked to bridge digital gaps and promote trade-ready agribusinesses in West Africa. By investing in local expertise, ITC’s EAT programme is laying the groundwork for a more inclusive and digitally connected agricultural economy in West Africa.
