Ragots numériques : quand les groupes WhatsApp deviennent de sérieuses zones à cyber-risques

Malgré leur popularité auprès des employés, les plateformes de messagerie informelle posent des risques importants à la cybersécurité des organisations. L’enquête annuelle sur la cybersécurité de KnowBe4 (www.KnowBe4.com) Afrique 2025 a révélé que 93 % des répondants africains utilisent WhatsApp pour les communications professionnelles, dépassant les e-mails et Microsoft Teams. Que peuvent faire les organisations pour se protéger des fuites de données et d’autres menaces ? 

Pour de nombreuses organisations, des plateformes comme WhatsApp et Telegram sont devenues partie intégrante de la communication sur le lieu de travail. Leur facilité d’utilisation est ce qui les rend si populaires, explique Anna Collard, SVP Content Strategy and Evangelist chez KnowBe4 Africa. “Particulièrement sur le continent, beaucoup de gens préfèrent WhatsApp parce que c’est rapide, familier et sans friction”, affirme-t-elle. “Ces applications sont déjà sur nos téléphones et intégrées à nos routines quotidiennes.” 

En termes de collaboration, ces plateformes aident également les employés à travailler ensemble, surtout dans des environnements de travail à distance ou hybrides. “Il semble naturel de “pinger” un collègue sur WhatsApp, surtout si vous essayez d’obtenir une réponse rapide”, dit-elle. “Mais la commodité a souvent un coût en termes de contrôle et de conformité.” 

Messagerie informelle, risques formels 

Des cas récents ont souligné les risques liés à l’utilisation de plateformes informelles pour la communication professionnelle. De plus en plus, les messages WhatsApp sont utilisés comme preuves dans les tribunaux du travail et d’autres affaires juridiques. La banque britannique NatWest est allée jusqu’à interdire les messages WhatsApp à son personnel. Aux États-Unis, un plan d’attaque militaire top-secret au Yémen a été divulgué sur la plateforme de messagerie Signal plus tôt cette année, le plan ayant été involontairement partagé avec un rédacteur de journal et d’autres civils, y compris la femme et le frère du secrétaire à la Défense. 

Les communications officielles qui se retrouvent sur des appareils personnels et des plateformes informelles sont un problème très clairement non exclusif au secteur des entreprises. 

“Il y a plusieurs niveaux de risque”, déclare Collard. “Il est important de se rappeler que WhatsApp n’a pas été conçu pour un usage interne en entreprise, mais comme un outil grand public. De ce fait, il n’intègre pas les mêmes contrôles de niveau professionnel et de confidentialité qu’un outil de communication d’entreprise, tel que Microsoft Teams ou Slack.” 

Le plus grand risque pour les organisations est la fuite de données. “Le partage accidentel ou intentionnel d’informations confidentielles, telles que les coordonnées des clients, les chiffres financiers, les stratégies internes ou les identifiants de connexion, sur des groupes informels peut avoir des conséquences désastreuses”, dit-elle. “C’est aussi totalement hors du contrôle de l’organisation, créant un problème d’informatique fantôme.” C’est une préoccupation croissante, car l’enquête annuelle sur la cybersécurité de KnowBe4 Afrique 2025 a noté que jusqu’à 80 % des répondants utilisent des appareils personnels pour le travail, dont beaucoup ne sont pas gérés, créant des angles morts importants pour les organisations. 

Un autre risque majeur est le manque d’auditabilité. “Les plateformes informelles n’ont pas les pistes d’audit nécessaires pour se conformer aux réglementations, en particulier dans des secteurs comme la finance où les exigences en matière de traitement des données sont strictes”, explique Collard. 

Le phishing et le vol d’identité sont également des menaces. “Les attaquants adorent les plateformes où la vérification d’identité est faible”, dit-elle, ajoutant qu’au moins 10 personnes de son réseau personnel ont signalé avoir été victimes d’usurpation d’identité et d’escroqueries de prise de contrôle de compte WhatsApp. “Une fois que l’escroc a accès au compte, dans de nombreux cas via des échanges de cartes SIM, l’utilisateur réel est bloqué et il a accès à toutes ses communications, contacts et fichiers précédents”, commente-t-elle. “Ils se font alors passer pour la victime pour tromper leurs contacts, leur demandant souvent de l’argent ou même des informations plus personnelles.” 

Au-delà de la sécurité, l’utilisation de ces canaux peut également entraîner des communications inappropriées entre les employés ou le flou des frontières entre vie professionnelle et vie privée, entraînant un épuisement professionnel. “Un flux constant de messages peut également être distrayant et réduire la productivité”, déclare Collard. 

Mettre en place les bonnes protections 

Pour les organisations qui souhaitent atténuer ces risques, il est important de mettre en place une stratégie de communication claire, soutient Collard. “Premièrement, proposez des alternatives sécurisées”, dit-elle. “Ne vous contentez pas de dire aux gens ce qu’il ne faut pas utiliser. Assurez-vous que des outils comme Teams ou Slack sont faciles d’accès et clairement approuvés.” 

La prochaine étape consiste à éduquer les employés sur l’importance d’une communication sécurisée. “Cette formation devrait inclure les principes de pleine conscience numérique, tels que faire une pause avant d’envoyer, réfléchir à ce que vous partagez et avec qui, et être attentif aux déclencheurs émotionnels comme l’urgence ou la peur, car ce sont des tactiques courantes dans les attaques d’ingénierie sociale”, partage Collard. “En promouvant la sécurité psychologique, les employés se sentent à l’aise de remettre en question les demandes étranges, même si elles semblent provenir d’un patron ou d’un client.” 

Ceci est particulièrement vital compte tenu du “fossé de confiance” souligné dans le nouveau rapport KnowBe4 Africa Human Risk Management Report 2025, où une perception élevée de la sensibilisation aux politiques de cybersécurité ne se traduit souvent pas par une confiance ou un soutien total des employés pour signaler les incidents ou remettre en question les communications suspectes. 

En introduisant des outils de communication approuvés, les organisations peuvent bénéficier de fonctionnalités de sécurité supplémentaires, telles que les journaux d’audit, la protection des données, le contrôle d’accès et l’intégration avec d’autres outils métier. “Ces plateformes favorisent également des normes de communication plus conscientes, comme la planification de messages ou la définition des statuts de disponibilité”, déclare Collard. “L’utilisation de plateformes approuvées aide à maintenir des limites saines, afin que le travail n’envahisse pas tous les recoins de votre vie personnelle. Il s’agit autant du bien-être numérique que de la cybersécurité.” 

En conclusion, Collard soutient que si la messagerie informelle offre de la commodité, son utilisation incontrôlée introduit des cyber-risques importants. “Les organisations doivent aller au-delà de la simple reconnaissance du problème et mettre en œuvre de manière proactive des politiques claires, proposer des alternatives sécurisées et donner aux employés la pleine conscience numérique nécessaire pour naviguer en toute sécurité dans ces zones à cyber-risques”, souligne-t-elle.

308 arrested in N Cape Operation Shanela

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Northern Cape is continuing its efforts to address crime through Operation Shanela II. 

The most recent phase of the operation, conducted from Monday, 25 August to Sunday, 31 August, resulted in the arrest of 308 individuals.

The operation included vehicle checkpoints, stop-and-search activities, foot and vehicle patrols, compliance inspections, and targeted interventions aimed at curbing drug trafficking and illicit goods smuggling.

During the week-long initiative, police stopped and searched 3 546 vehicles and 6 663 individuals.

Compliance inspections were also carried out at various premises, including second-hand goods dealers, scrapyards, recyclers, private security companies, firearm dealers, formal and informal businesses, farms, and mining sites.

The arrests were related to a range of offences, such as murder, attempted murder, rape, assault, burglary, theft, possession of unlicensed ammunition, malicious damage to property, illegal liquor trading, possession of dangerous weapons, driving under the influence, drug-related offences, illicit mining, stock theft, and immigration violations.

According to a SAPS statement, several individuals wanted for outstanding warrants and violations of court orders were also apprehended. Police confiscated quantities of alcohol, drugs, and cash suspected to be linked to criminal activity.

In addition to enforcement efforts, awareness campaigns addressing women’s empowerment and gender-based violence were conducted across the province. These initiatives were undertaken in partnership with the SAPS Women’s Network, Men for Change, and community policing forums.

Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, the Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, acknowledged the contributions of all law enforcement agencies involved and highlighted the importance of cooperation between the police, communities, and the private sector in combating crime. — SAnews.gov.za

SANParks reopens hiking trail on Table Mountain

The South African National Parks (SANParks) has announced the second phase of the reopening of Silvermine Gate 1 and most of the trails in the Silvermine area on Table Mountain on Monday.

This follows the successful reopening of Silvermine Gate 2 and areas of Tokai on 1 July after the fire in late April 2025 that affected approximately 2 800 hectares in the area.

Located in the central section of the Table Mountain National Park, Silvermine offers some of the best hikes in the park with beautiful fynbos landscapes.

“Upper Tokai will also reopen on 1 September 2025, including Levels 4 and 5, which were previously closed in July due to unstable terrain during the rainy season. However, a section of the road from the Silvermine boom gate to the junction of Level 4 and 5 will remain inaccessible to cyclists, as rehabilitation efforts are still ongoing,” SANParks said.

The Donkey Trail from Silvermine to Upper Tokai and the Level 1 and 2 Jeep tracks for horseback riders will remain closed until further notice due to severe rain damage.

Silvermine Gate 1, located on the western side of Ou Kaapse Weg, which includes the Silvermine Dam, the Elephant’s Eye trail and the Silvermine Riverwalk, will be officially open to the public. 

“Maintenance work will continue in certain areas, including the construction of new ablution facilities. Visitors will be able to make use of the ablution facilities located at the entrance gate and near the western side of the dam until the burnt facilities near the dam parking can be reconstructed. The uThango braai area will remain closed and is expected to reopen in December 2025, pending ongoing restoration of the infrastructure.

“Although some trails may seem visually unaffected, access is being restricted in specific areas to ensure user safety and support ecological restoration efforts. Public safety is our top priority,” SANParks said.

Therefore, all trail users are urged to strictly adhere to signage, area closures, and instructions from rangers. 

Visitors must remain vigilant and stick to designated paths at all times.

Government extends fishing permits for small pelagic sector

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment has extended permits for the Small Pelagic sector due to review applications brought before the Western Cape High Court on the finalisation of appeals in the 2021/22 Fishing Rights Allocation Process (FRAP).

The department had originally aimed to complete this process by 29 August 2025. 

However, later court orders required adjustments to this timetable. Following consultation with stakeholders, the new deadline for finalisation is 30 October 2025.

“By extending permits and engaging openly with stakeholders, we are safeguarding stability in the sector while honouring the principle of fairness. Our goal is to build trust, certainty and sustainability for the fishing communities who depend on these resources,” Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Dr Dion George said.

The Minister said fairness and transparency are non-negotiable in the allocation of fishing rights.
“That is why we must follow due process and resolve all legal matters before finalising decisions that affect rightsholders and the sustainability of our fishery. 

“Because allocations in this sector are interconnected, final decisions on rights and quantum can only be made once all appeals have been reconsidered and comments on the Provisional Sardine and Anchovy Appeals Reconsideration General Published Reasons (GPRs) have been taken into account,” George said. –SAnews.gov.za

Speech by HE the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs At The High-Level International Conference on the Peaceful Settlement of the Palestinian Cause and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution

 Your Excellencies;

Distinguished attendees;

I would like to begin by expressing my sincere appreciation to His Excellency President Emmanuel Macron, President of the French Republic, and to His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of the sisterly Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, for their joint initiative in organizing this historic conference under the auspices of the United Nations. This conference addresses one of the prolonged issues of peace and security, and one of the last remaining manifestations of colonial injustice on the international agenda.

Distinguished attendees,

Although this conference represents a glimmer of hope, we are navigating a critical juncture in the region, amidst a devastating war waged by Israel on the Gaza Strip for two years and an escalating humanitarian crisis affecting over two million individuals, the majority of whom are women and children.

In one of the most harrowing and painful moments of this tragedy, we witnessed scenes that represent a disgrace to humanity as a whole—civilians, weakened by starvation and siege, killed while standing in queues waiting for a loaf of bread, a bag of flour, or a meal to sustain their children. What future can be built upon the corpses of the starving queues? And what peace can emerge amidst this level of starvation, humiliation, and killing?

In the face of this catastrophic situation, the State of Qatar has spared no effort in undertaking diplomatic endeavors to halt the bloodshed of innocent lives, alleviate their suffering, and secure the release of hostages and detainees. The State of Qatar, based on its unwavering stance, has condemned all forms of targeting civilians. However, we categorically reject double standards, as a human is a human, and a child is a child. No one has the right to discriminate against innocent people and their right to life based on political, racial, or other grounds.

The matter has reached the point where the normalization of using starvation and targeting hospitals as methods of warfare has become a precedent that can no longer be accepted, as if it has turned into a routine practice in every conflict. The State of Qatar reiterates its unequivocal rejection of the use of food as a tool of pressure or a weapon in conflicts, and strongly condemns the policies of blockade and forced displacement being practiced against innocent civilians, as well as the repeated targeting of hospitals, shelters for displaced persons, and vital facilities, in blatant violation of international law.

Excellencies, 

The mediation efforts undertaken by the State of Qatar, in partnership with the sisterly Arab Republic of Egypt and the United States of America, have yielded tangible results, manifested in the delivery of substantial quantities of aid and the release of hundreds of hostages and detainees from both sides.

Despite recurring obstacles, attempts to undermine the humanitarian trajectory, and the demonization of the efforts of mediating states, our efforts continue with the aim of achieving an immediate ceasefire, paving the way towards the end of the crisis, and the initiation of recovery and reconstruction efforts. This necessitates that all parties exhibit a sense of responsibility and support all initiatives aimed at achieving this goal. 

Distinguished attendees, 

The war against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip has not only resulted in unprecedented suffering for innocent civilians, but has also undermined the credibility of international law and the universal values upon which the institutions of the international community have been founded since the Second World War.

On the other hand, it has proved that policies of force have failed, and will continue to fail, in liquidating the Palestinian cause. All that such policies have achieved is the exacerbation of further tragedies, bitterness, feelings of injustice, and scenes of killing and destruction that will remain etched in the memory of peoples across the globe. The calamities caused by the war and its political failure underscore the necessity of achieving a just and comprehensive resolution to the Palestinian cause. The key lies in acknowledging the injustice inflicted upon the Palestinian people and implementing justice that has been delayed for approximately eighty years.

Driven by its unwavering commitment to peace, the State of Qatar reaffirms its full support for the objectives of this conference and its dedication to playing an active role in ensuring its success and promoting opportunities for a peaceful resolution in the Middle East.

In this context, the State of Qatar, in collaboration with Canada and Mexico, co-chaired the third working group of the conference, which focused on the theme of “Peace Narratives.” This group addressed significant topics and concluded with priority principles and proposals aimed at achieving the overarching goal of the conference. To create an enabling environment for sustainable peace, there is a pressing need to promote positive narratives that support peace between both sides, grounded in the rejection of violence, the refusal of incitement rhetoric, and the countering of attempts to dehumanize the other party.

Distinguished attendees, 

The State of Qatar reaffirms its steadfast position in supporting the peaceful resolution of the Palestinian cause in accordance with the principles of international law and relevant international legitimacy resolutions, based on the two-state solution as the only viable option for putting an end to the conflict and achieving the just and comprehensive peace.

From this standpoint, Qatar calls for a clear and unified international stance that rejects all practices that serve to obstruct negotiations and opportunities for achieving just and comprehensive peace. In this context, we welcome the recognition of the State of Palestine by several states, within the borders of June 4, 1967, encompassing the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, as we firmly believe that this constitutes a fundamental step toward achieving regional and international security and stability.

We also welcome the commitment of the friendly French Republic to recognize the State of Palestine next September.

Distinguished attendees, 

The convening of this conference embodies a collective will of the international community to translate words into actions and to seriously contribute towards advancing the trajectory of the peaceful resolution of the Palestinian cause in all its dimensions. The international community bears a pivotal role in creating the appropriate conditions for reaching a permanent and just solution, by restoring the credibility of international legitimacy following this horrific war and providing the necessary political, economic, and humanitarian support.

We hope that this conference will serve as a turning point leading to tangible commitments that go beyond statements and positions, and pave the way for practical steps toward implementing the two-state solution, in a way that ensures a just, comprehensive, and lasting resolution to the conflict, and contributes to the establishment of peace, security, and stability across the entire region.

As more African governments introduce investor-friendly laws to enhance mining frameworks, the upcoming African Mining Week (AMW) 2025 will bring together several African mining ministers to showcase opportunities across their jurisdictions.

With the World Bank estimating that Africa’s mining sector could generate an additional $2 billion in revenue and create 3.8 million new jobs by 2030 through localized value addition, AMW 2025 arrives at a critical moment. Chad’s Abdoulaye will join a panel titled Africa’s Mineral Future: A Roadmap Toward Sustainable Growth and Value Creation which will highlight strategies to boost sustainable development in the sector. Meanwhile, DRC’s Lwamba will feature in the Cobalt Opportunity: DRC’s Strategic Position in the EV Revolution panel, emphasizing the country’s strategic role in the global energy transition and its efforts to leverage energy infrastructure to unlock its estimated $24 trillion in mineral wealth.

DHARAMBEER GOKHOOL, Président de la République de Maurice, afin de partager l’impact de leurs 100 bourses d’études pour les médecins mauriciens en partenariat avec le Ministère de la Santé et de souligner leur engagement à long terme pour transformer les soins de santé publics à Maurice.

Sénatrice, Dr. Rasha Kelej, CEO de la Fondation Merck et Présidente de la Campagne « Plus Qu’une Mère », a souligné : « Ce fut un grand honneur de rencontrer l’Honorable Mme Marie Arianne Navarre-Marie, Ministre de l’Égalité des Genres et du Bien-être de la Famille, et de partager avec elle l’impact de notre partenariat et de nos programmes depuis 2017 qui visent à transformer les soins aux patients, à renforcer les capacités des soins de santé et des médias, à autonomiser les femmes dans les STEM, à soutenir l’éducation des filles et à sensibiliser aux problèmes sociaux et sanitaires à Maurice et dans le reste de l’Afrique.

Je suis très heureuse d’annoncer qu’en collaboration avec le Ministère de l’Égalité des Genres et du Bien-être de la Famille, nous lançons notre programme « Éduquer Linda » dans le pays, dans le cadre duquel nous soutiendrons l’éducation de 20 écolières mauriciennes brillantes mais défavorisées, jusqu’à l’obtention de leur diplôme. Grâce à cela, nous leur donnerons les moyens de terminer leurs études et d’atteindre leur plein potentiel. »

La Fondation Merck a accordé 100 bourses à des médecins mauriciens dans 42 spécialités essentielles et mal desservies.

« Lors de ma rencontre avec S.E. M. DHARAMBEER GOKHOOL, Président de la République de Maurice, nous avons également évoqué la possibilité de dispenser des formations spécialisées aux médecins mauriciens dans des domaines innovants et émergents tels que la Thérapie par Cellules Souches en Pathologie, Traitement par Cellules CAR-T, L’IA en Radiologie, Radiothérapie et Oncologie Médicale, Oncologie Chirurgicale Robotisée, Neurologie, Néphrologie, Urologie et Neurochirurgie. Nous sommes fermement déterminés à collaborer étroitement avec le Ministère de la Santé pour améliorer l’accès à des solutions de santé innovantes et équitables », a ajouté le Dr. Kelej. 

Les 100 bourses d’études destinées aux médecins mauriciens locaux ont été attribuées pour des Diplômes Post-Universitaires d’un an et des Masters de deux ans dans de nombreuses spécialités essentielles, notamment la Fertilité, Embryologie, Soins Sexuels et Reproductifs, Oncologie, Prévention Cardiovasculaire, Diabète, Endocrinologie, Médecine Aiguë, Pneumologie, Gastroentérologie, Dermatologie, Neuroimagerie pour la Recherche, Soins Sexuels et Reproductifs, Microbiologie Clinique et Maladies Infectieuses, Médecine Interne, Médecine d’Urgence Pédiatrique, Ophtalmologie, Chirurgie Laparoscopique, Soins Intensifs, Médecine Néonatale, Psychiatrie, Médecine Familiale, Cytopathologie Avancée et bien d’autres.

À ce jour, la Fondation Merck a accordé plus de 2 280 bourses à de jeunes médecins de 52 pays dans 44 spécialités essentielles et mal desservies, dont beaucoup sont devenus les premiers spécialistes de leur pays.

Lors de sa visite, la CEO de la Fondation Merck a également rencontré les hauts fonctionnaires du Cabinet du Ministre de la Santé de l’île Maurice.

La Fondation Merck a également organisé la 4ème édition de sa Formation des Médias sur la Santé pour les représentants des médias mauriciens, en partenariat avec le Ministère de l’Égalité des Genres et du Bien-être de la Famille de Maurice. Cette formation visait à souligner le rôle important des médias pour influencer la société et créer un changement culturel afin de répondre à un large éventail de questions sociales et sanitaires, telles que : la lutte contre la stigmatisation liée à l’infertilité, le soutien à l’éducation des filles, l’autonomisation des femmes, mettre fin au mariage des enfants, mettre fin aux MGF, la lutte contre les violences basées sur le genre, et la sensibilisation sur le diabète et à l’hypertension. Elle était coprésidée par la CEO de la Fondation Merck et le Ministre de l’Égalité des Genres et du Bien-être de la Famille de Maurice.

Au cours de la formation, l’Appel à Candidatures pour 8 prix importants de la Fondation Merck a été lancé pour les médias, les musiciens, les créateurs de mode, les cinéastes, les étudiants et les nouveaux talents potentiels dans ces domaines.

A Fundação Merck concedeu 100 bolsas de estudo para médicos mauricianos em 42 especialidades críticas e carentes.

DHARAMBEER GOKHOOL, Presidente da República das Maurícias, também discutimos a possibilidade de oferecer treinamento especializado para médicos mauricianos em áreas inovadoras e emergentes, como Terapia com Células-Tronco em patologia, tratamento com células T CAR, IA em Radiologia, Radioterapia e Oncologia Médica, Oncologia Cirúrgica Robótica, Neurologia, Nefrologia, Urologia e Neurocirurgia. Estamos fortemente comprometidos em trabalhar em estreita colaboração com o Ministério da Saúde para melhorar o acesso a soluções de saúde inovadoras e equitativas”, acrescentou a Dra. Kelej. 

As 100 bolsas de estudo para médicos locais das Maurícias foram fornecidas para Diploma de Pós-Graduação de Um Ano e Mestrados de Dois Anos em muitas especialidades críticas, incluindo Fertilidade, Embriologia, Cuidados Sexuais e Reprodutivos, Oncologia, Cardiovascular Preventiva, Diabetes, Endocrinologia, Medicina Aguda, Respiratória, Gastroenterologia, Dermatologia, Neuroimagem para Investigação, Cuidados Sexuais e Reprodutivos, Microbiologia Clínica e doenças infecciosas, Medicina Interna, Medicina de Emergência Pediátrica, Oftalmologia, Habilidades Cirúrgicas Laparoscópicas, Cuidados Críticos, Medicina Neonatal, Psiquiatria, Medicina de Família, Citopatologia Avançada e muito mais.

A sessão de treinamento foi realizada para enfatizar o importante papel que a mídia desempenha na influência da sociedade e na criação de uma mudança cultural, com o objectivo de abordar uma ampla gama de questões sociais e de saúde, como: Quebrar o Estigma da Infertilidade, Apoiar a Educação de Meninas, Empoderamento Feminino, Acabar com o Casamento Infantil, Acabar com a MGF, Acabar com a VBG e Conscientizar sobre a Diabetes e a Hipertensão. A sessão foi co-presidida pela CEO da Fundação Merck e Ministra da Igualdade do Género e Bem-Estar Familiar.

Durante a sessão de treinamento, foi anunciada a Chamada de candidaturas para 8 importantes prémios da Fundação Merck de Jornalismo, Canção, Moda, Cinema, para estudantes, e novos talentos com potencial nessas áreas.

During her visit, she also met H.E. MR. DHARAMBEER GOKHOOL, The President of Republic of Mauritius, to share the impact of their 100 Scholarships for Mauritian Doctors in partnership with Ministry of Health and underscore their long-term commitment to transform public healthcare in Mauritius.

Senator, Dr. Rasha Kelej, CEO of Merck Foundation and President of “More Than a Mother” Campaign emphasized, “It was a great honor to meet Hon’ble Ms. Marie Arianne Navarre-Marie, Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare and share with her the impact of our partnership and programs since 2017 that aim to transform patient care, build healthcare and media capacity, to empower women in STEM, support girl education and raise awareness about social and health issues in Mauritius and the rest of Africa.

I am very happy to share that together with the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, we are launching our Educating Linda Program in the country, as a part of which we will be supporting the education of 20 high performing yet underprivileged Mauritian schoolgirls, till they graduate. Through this, we will be empowering them to complete their studies and reach their full potential.”

Merck Foundation has provided 100 scholarships for Mauritian doctors in 42 critical and under-served specialties.

“During my meeting with H.E. MR. DHARAMBEER GOKHOOL, The President of Republic of Mauritius, we also discussed the possibility of providing specialized training for Mauritian doctors in innovative and emerging fields such as Stem Cell Therapy in pathology, CAR T-cell treatment, AI in Radiology, Radiotherapy and Medical Oncology, Robotic Surgical Oncology, Neurology, Nephrology, Urology, and Neurosurgery. We are strongly committed to work closely with Ministry of Health to improve access to innovative and equitable healthcare solutions”, added Dr. Kelej. 

The 100 scholarships for local Mauritian Doctors have been provided for One-Year PG Diploma and Two-year Master Degrees in many critical specialties including Fertility, Embryology, Sexual & Reproductive Care, Oncology, Preventative Cardiovascular, Diabetes, Endocrinology, Acute Medicine, Respiratory, Gastroenterology, Dermatology, Neuroimaging for Research, Sexual & Reproductive Care, Clinical Microbiology and infectious diseases, Internal Medicine, Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Ophthalmology, Laparoscopic Surgical Skills, Critical Care, Neonatal Medicine, Psychiatry, Family Medicine, Advanced Cytopathology and many more.

Merck Foundation has so far provided more than 2280 scholarships for young doctors from 52 countries in 44 critical and underserved specialties, with many of them becoming the first specialists in their countries.

During her visit, Merck Foundation CEO also met the Senior Officials from the Office of Hon’ble Minister of Health, Mauritius.

Merck Foundation also conducted the 4th Edition of their Health Media Training for the Mauritian Media Representatives in partnership with Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Mauritius. The training session was conducted to emphasize on the important role that media plays to influence society to create a cultural shift with the aim to address wide range of social and health issues such as: Breaking Infertility Stigma, Supporting Girl Education, Women Empowerment, Ending Child Marriage, Ending FGM, Stopping GBV, Diabetes and Hypertension awareness. It was co-chaired by Merck Foundation CEO and Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Mauritius.

During the training session, the Call for Application for 8 important Merck Foundation Awards were announced for Media, Musicians, Fashion Designers, Filmmakers, students, and new potential talents in these fields.

Merck Foundation Africa Media Recognition Awards “More Than a Mother” 2025, in partnership with Media Trust Board, Mauritius: Media representatives and media students are invited to showcase their work to raise awareness about one or more of the following social issues such as: Breaking Infertility Stigma, Supporting Girl Education, Women Empowerment, Ending Child Marriage, Ending FGM, and/ or Stopping GBV at all levels.

Submission deadline: 30th September 2025.

  1.  Merck Foundation Fashion Awards “More Than a Mother” 2025, in partnership with Academy of Design and Innovation, Mauritius: All African Fashion Students and Designers are invited to create and share designs to deliver strong and influential messages to raise awareness about one or more of the following social issues such as: Breaking Infertility Stigma, Supporting Girl Education, Women Empowerment, Ending Child Marriage, Ending FGM, and/ or Stopping GBV at all levels.

Submission deadline: 30th September 2025.

  1. Merck Foundation Film Awards “More Than a Mother” 2025: All African Filmmakers, Students of Film Making Training Institutions, or Young Talents of Africa are invited to create and share a long or short FILMS, either drama, documentary, or docudrama to deliver strong and influential messages to address one or more of the following social issues such as: Breaking Infertility Stigma, Supporting Girl Education, Women Empowerment, Ending Child Marriage, Ending FGM, and/ or Stopping GBV at all levels.
