Nigeria signs Intra-African Trade Fair 2027 host agreement; gears up for Africa’s biggest marketplace

Source: APO – Report:

The Federal Republic of Nigeria has today signed the host agreement for the fifth Intra-African Trade Fair 2027 (IATF2027), taking over the baton from Algeria which hosted the highly successful fourth edition that recorded US$49.94 billion in trade and investment deals.

The agreement signing ceremony was held in Lagos, the designated ‘host city’, in partnership with African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), the African Union Commission and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat, reinforcing Nigeria’s central role in advancing Intra-African trade and economic integration across the continent.

Scheduled to take place from November 5 – 11, 2027, IATF2027 is targeting over US$50 billion in trade and investment deals, 100,000 visitors, 2,500 exhibitors, and participation from more than 100 countries. The Fair will be held under the theme “Global Africa, Smart Trade- From Market Access to Market Power” featuring diverse programme notably the trade exhibitions; AfCFTA-focused trade and investment forum; the Global Africa Day to strengthen ties with Africa’s diaspora; a B2B (Business-to-Business) & B2G (Business-to-Government) platform; Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX) to showcase Africa’s creative economy; the Sub Sovereign Governments Network for regional and local governments integration; special days for countries, public and private sector to showcase their trade and investment potential, tourism and cultural highlights; Africa Automotive Show; AU Youth Start-up pavilion for African youth start-ups; and the Africa Research & Innovation Hub (ARIH) for academia and researchers.

In just four editions since 2018, IATF has cumulatively generated over US$167 billion in trade and investment deals and welcomed more than 180,000 visitors from 132 countries. This strategic partnership creates a uniquely African framework that blends policy direction, financial backing, and trade facilitation. IATF benefits from continent-wide institutional alignment, setting it apart in both structure and purpose.

Delivering his opening remarks, H.E. Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Chairperson of the IATF2027 Advisory Council and Former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, underscored the strategic importance of the Fair in shaping Africa’s economic sovereignty.

“The signing of this host agreement marks a momentous milestone for Nigeria and for the continent. Bringing IATF2027 to Lagos is historically significant, as this city hosted the Lagos Plan of Action adopted in 1980, which championed Africa’s industrialisation and economic self-sufficiency. We have to work hard to keep moving towards the Africa we want. I am confident that IATF2027 will surpass all previous editions in both scope and impact as we advance our shared goal for a unified African marketplace under the AfCFTA,” he remarked.

Commenting on Nigeria’s expanding footprint in intra-African commerce, H.E. Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, Federal Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, highlighted Nigeria’s rising contribution to continental trade flows.

Today, as the international trading system faces profound challenges, we must remain resolute in our commitment to mutually beneficial, rules-based trade. As we prepare to host Africa’s largest marketplace in Lagos in 2027, we have an opportunity not only to reflect on our reality but to design the future of African trade integration and economic transformation. The work ahead of us under the AfCFTA is not only expansive but also existential for our survival and prosperity. IATF 2027 will therefore be a defining moment in accelerating and transforming intra-African trade and investment. Together, we must align our markets, our industries and our talent to deliver the prosperous Africa we envision,” she affirmed.

Appreciating Nigeria’s longstanding partnership and leadership in advancing intra-African trade, Dr. George Elombi, President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Afreximbank, commended the Government’s commitment to the AfCFTA vision, noting that Nigeria’s scale, entrepreneurial depth, and industrial capacity make it a natural host for the 2027 edition.

“Nigeria’s vibrant entrepreneurial spirit gives us confidence that IATF2027 in Lagos will be a remarkable event that strengthens trade and investment across the continent. The trade fair is about building a strong pan-African single market and expanding intra-African trade beyond the levels we see today. Our collective duty is to use this platform to build value chains, create jobs and generate prosperity for our people. When Africans decide to work together, as they will at IATF 2027, the opportunities for transformation are limitless,” he highlighted.

Nigeria remains central to the success of AfCFTA, not only because of its market size but also due to its resource base and industrial potential. As a leading producer of oil and gas, solid minerals, including limestone, iron ore, gold, and lithium, and key agricultural commodities, Nigeria combines industrial capacity with a vibrant SME sector and a dynamic role in intra-African trade. This unique mix positions the country to drive value chains that power regional integration and strengthen the continent’s economic resilience.

Describing Nigeria as a major contributor to African Union growth and regional economic transformation, H.E. Francisca Tatchoup Belobe, AU Commissioner for Economic Development, Trade, Tourism, Industry and Minerals, highlighted the importance of aligning industrial policy, mineral development, and trade facilitation to unlock Africa’s full potential.

“When we launched the IATF in 2018, it was a bold experiment in connectivity. It was not only a commercial event, but rather a strategic tool to increase intra-African trade, which remains stubbornly low. As we prepare for the fifth edition of the IATF, we must ensure that it propels intra-African trade and helps Africa reposition itself in the global trade landscape. We should therefore aim very high in 2027, especially as the IATF takes place in Nigeria, the most populous African country and one of the continent’s largest economies. Let us make IATF 2027 a defining moment that ignites new momentum for Africa’s investment, industrialisation and trade,” she said.

Reflecting on the broader continental impact, Cynthia E. Gnassingbé-Essonam, Director of Private Sector Engagement and Communications at AfCFTA Secretariat, who represented H.E. Wamkele Mene, Secretary General, AfCFTA Secretariat, emphasised that Nigeria’s host of IATF2027 reinforces collective efforts to operationalise the AfCFTA and deepen regional value chains.

“Today’s ceremony marks an important milestone in our collective efforts to advance the objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area. The Intra-African Trade Fair has established itself as Africa’s premier marketplace for trade and investment, bringing together businesses, investors and policymakers from across the continent and the diaspora. Nigeria’s host of IATF 2027 is both timely and significant, and we are confident it will deliver an impactful trade fair that reflects the ambition of the AfCFTA and the aspirations of African businesses,” she commended.

IATF brings together continental and global players to showcase and exhibit their goods and services and to explore business and investment opportunities in the continent. It also provides a platform to share trade, investment and market information with stakeholders and allows participants to discuss and identify solutions to the challenges confronting intra-African trade and investment. In addition to African participants, the Trade Fair is also open to businesses and investors from non-African countries interested in doing business in Africa and in supporting the continent’s transformation through industrialisation and export development.

International African Energy, Oil And Gas Summit (IAEOGS) Qatar 2026

Source: APO – Report:

The 5th Edition of the International African Energy, Oil and Gas Summit (IAEOGS Qatar 2026) is set to convene in Doha, positioning Qatar at the centre of one of the most strategic energy investment gatherings focused on Africa’s future.

IAEOGS Qatar 2026 is not a conventional conference. It is a deliberately curated, high-level investment platform designed to align capital, policy, and bankable projects across Africa’s oil, gas, power, and clean energy value chains.

Under the theme “Igniting Africa’s Energy Future,” the Summit arrives at a defining moment. Africa holds over 125 billion barrels of proven oil reserves, more than 620 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, and an expanding portfolio of renewable and critical mineral assets. Yet more than 600 million people across the continent still lack access to reliable electricity.

The opportunity is vast.

The urgency is real.

The time for structured action is now.

IAEOGS Qatar 2026 will bring together over 1,000 carefully selected senior participants from more than 45 countries, including:

  • Energy and Finance Ministers
  • National Oil Companies and Utilities
  • International Oil, Gas and Power Companies
  • Sovereign Wealth Funds and Institutional Investors
  • Development Finance Institutions
  • EPC Firms and Technology Providers
  • Multilateral and Policy Institutions

The Summit is designed for serious engagement. Participation is intentional. Access is strategic.

What to Expect

  • Ministerial and CEO-level policy dialogues
  • Investment showcases and project financing roundtables
  • Curated B2B and B2G engagements
  • Strategic exhibitions by energy and infrastructure leaders
  • African Energy Excellence Awards
  • Closed-door investor and executive sessions
  • High-level networking receptions

Projected outcomes include USD 1 billion+ in structured investment discussions and over 500 curated meetings, ensuring that conversations move beyond declarations toward measurable results.

Why Qatar

Hosting IAEOGS 2026 in Doha reflects a deliberate strategic positioning. Qatar stands among the world’s most influential energy and investment hubs, recognised globally for LNG leadership, financial strength, advanced infrastructure, and diplomatic reach.

As a gateway connecting Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and Asia, Qatar offers proximity to sovereign wealth funds, global energy operators, and deep capital markets capable of accelerating Africa’s energy transformation.

IAEOGS Qatar 2026 will serve as a strategic bridge — connecting African energy opportunities directly to global capital, technology, and decision-makers in an environment designed for discretion, efficiency, and results.

A Defining Moment for Africa’s Energy Trajectory

At a time when global energy security, industrial growth, and energy transition objectives are being recalibrated, Africa represents both opportunity and responsibility. The continent’s development demands scalable infrastructure, disciplined investment, and forward-looking policy frameworks.

IAEOGS Qatar 2026 provides the platform where those elements converge.

Sponsorship opportunities, speaking engagements, and strategic exhibition placements are now open, with limited availability to preserve the Summit’s high-level character.

Six people were swept away when their vehicle attempted to cross a flooded low-lying bridge in eNadi, eMabovini, after 19:00 last Thursday evening.

Search and rescue teams recovered the bodies of two females; the first was located in the iNadi River (uMsinga) and the second in the uThukela River on the Nkandla Local Municipality side.

One of the deceased females was pregnant.

On Saturday, further rescue operations led to the recovery of two more victims from the uThukela River: a female on the uMsinga side and a male at eMakhabeleni within the uMvoti Local Municipality.

The victims identified thus far are aged between 25 and 40.

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), through the Provincial Disaster Management Centre, continues to coordinate search and recovery operations following Thursday’s tragic incident.

President Ramaphosa reaffirms strong SA–Brazil partnership during State Visit

President Cyril Ramaphosa has reaffirmed South Africa’s commitment to strengthening its strategic partnership with Brazil during his State Visit to the Federative Republic of Brazil.

Speaking in Brasília on Monday, following bilateral talks with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the President said the discussions focused on expanding cooperation between the two countries and advancing mutually beneficial programmes that support economic growth and development.

President Ramaphosa thanked the Brazilian government for the warm reception extended to the South African delegation and described the engagements as constructive and forward-looking.

The President also expressed condolences to the families affected by the recent floods and landslides in Brazil’s state of Minas Gerais.

“We wish to pay our respects to the victims of the recent floods and landslides in the state of Minas Gerais and to convey to the families of those who lost their lives our deepest condolences,” President Ramaphosa said.

The State Visit comes as South Africa marks the 30th anniversary of the adoption of its democratic Constitution, a milestone that the President said offered an opportunity to reflect on the country’s democratic progress and the sacrifices made during the struggle for freedom.

President Ramaphosa acknowledged Brazil’s solidarity with South Africa during the apartheid era, saying the support of the Brazilian people contributed meaningfully to the achievements of South Africa’s democracy.

The President noted that the visit takes place amid renewed conflict in the Middle East and reiterated South Africa’s call for a peaceful resolution of disputes, in line with the United Nations Charter.

“We condemn the loss of civilian life and the destruction of vital infrastructure. We call for an immediate cessation of hostilities,” he said.

The President emphasised that South Africa and Brazil share common priorities, including promoting equality, economic growth and the eradication of poverty.

“These shared values provide a strong basis for building practical, mutually beneficial programmes that advance our respective national development priorities. I am joined by several Ministers and officials. Working with their Brazilian counterparts, this delegation is well positioned to expand cooperation across key areas of mutual interest,” the President said.

Strengthening trade links

The President said South Africa’s interactions with the Brazilian government and the Business Forum are important steps in strengthening and expanding the strategic partnership.

He said the upcoming eighth session of the South Africa–Brazil Joint Commission, expected later this year, would further strengthen bilateral cooperation.

The President further emphasised that South Africa remains committed to strengthening cooperation in agriculture, agro‑processing and value‑added exports.

He also highlighted the importance of expanding economic ties between the two countries, including improving reciprocal market access through the Preferential Trade Agreement between the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) and MERCOSUR (Southern Common Market).

“Enhancing reciprocal market access, including through the MERCOSUR–SACU Preferential Trade Agreement, will be vital. Our business delegation stands ready to pursue new commercial opportunities,” he said.

During the engagements, progress was recorded in several areas of cooperation, including the conclusion of a Memorandum of Intent on Agriculture and a Memorandum of Understanding on Basic Education.

President Ramaphosa said South Africa serves as a strategic entry point for Brazil into the African continent, while Brazil provides a gateway for South Africa into Latin America and the Caribbean.

“This visit strengthens these linkages and supports broader regional engagement,” the President said.

President Ramaphosa reaffirmed South Africa’s commitment to advancing its strategic partnership with Brazil and expressed appreciation to President Lula for his hospitality.

The President also extended an invitation for President Lula to undertake a State Visit to South Africa in the near future. – SAnews.gov.za

Qatar Joins Regional-EU Summit Amid Escalating Military Tensions

Source: Government of Qatar

Doha, March 9, 2026

The State of Qatar on Monday participated in a joint summit bringing together leaders from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states, several regional countries and the European Union (EU), held virtually to discuss the escalating military situation in the region.

HE Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani led the Qatari delegation.

Participants included the Arab Republic of Egypt, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the Syrian Arab Republic, the Republic of Iraq, the Lebanese Republic, the Republic of Turkiye, and the Republic of Armenia.

The summit addressed the escalating military situation in the region and its serious repercussions on regional and international security and stability, as well as ways to bring the parties back to the negotiating table.

In his address, HE the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed the State of Qatar’s strong condemnation of Iran’s targeting of Qatari territories with ballistic missiles and drones. “These attacks constitute a blatant violation of our national sovereignty, a direct attack on our security and territorial integrity, and an unacceptable escalation that threatens the security and stability of the region,” His Excellency said.

His Excellency commended the effective response of the Qatari Armed Forces, saying that their vigilance and defensive capabilities helped protect the country and contain the effects of the attacks.

HE Sheikh Mohammed affirmed that the State of Qatar is fully prepared to defend its territories, protect its people, and safeguard its vital infrastructure. “We have complete confidence in the strength and readiness of our armed forces, and we continue to work with our partners to maintain stability and security in the region.”

His Excellency reiterated the State of Qatar’s strongest condemnation of the attacks on the sovereign territories of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Kingdom of Bahrain, the State of Kuwait, the Sultanate of Oman, the United Arab Emirates, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the Republic of Iraq, the Republic of Lebanon, the Republic of Turkiye, the Republic of Azerbaijan, and the Republic of Cyprus.

He affirmed the State of Qatar’s full solidarity with those countries in all measures they take to preserve their sovereignty, security, and stability, noting that these attacks undermine the principles of mediation and dialogue that the Sultanate of Oman has long championed and promoted in the region.

His Excellency also welcomed an EU statement, which reflects the strength of relations between the bloc and the GCC countries. The statement calls for de-escalation and affirms the commitment of the EU member states to protecting regional security and stability, particularly energy security, and ensuring freedom of navigation in accordance with international maritime regulations for commercial and civilian vessels.

His Excellency warned that the current situation does not only affect one country, but threatens the security of the entire region and exposes global energy markets and supply chains to serious risks.

“Qatar has always been a reliable and responsible energy producer,” he said, adding that the country remained committed to its partners and to the stability of global energy markets.

However, he said that attacks on energy facilities and the challenges facing maritime navigation in the Gulf forced Qatar to adopt temporary measures to ensure the safety of energy infrastructure and personnel. His Excellency said the measures cope with Qatar’s responsibility to protect lives and vital assets, promising that full supply will resume once the situation stabilizes and the safety of facilities is assured.

HE Sheikh Mohammed pointed out that the strikes in the region targeted sovereign territories, endangered civilians and damaged civilian infrastructure.

He noted that the State of Qatar had repeatedly warned, since the outbreak of the war in the Gaza Strip, that the continuation of war without a political solution would lead to further regional tensions and entanglements.

His Excellency emphasized that consolidating stability is a collective responsibility and maintaining international peace is a shared duty, reaffirming the State of Qatar’s commitment to working with its regional and international partners, including the European Union, to prevent the spread of tension and de-escalate the situation.

HE the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs concluded by expressing his appreciation for the EU’s support to the Gulf region in the field of defense, and voiced hopes for further cooperation in the future.

Remarks by President Cyril Ramaphosa at the Brazil-South Africa Business Forum during the State Visit to Brazil, Brasilia, Brazil

Source: President of South Africa –

Your Excellency, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva,
Distinguished Ministers, Ambassadors and Members of Delegations,
Leaders of Business,
Ladies and Gentlemen.,

It is a great honour for to be with you today in Brasilia.

Brazil and South Africa are much alike.

We are large, complex and diverse democracies. We are resource-rich and full of talent.

We carry the weight of significant inequality and we both carry the ambition to overcome it.

We are members of BRICS, partners in IBSA, advocates together within the G20 and at the WTO.

We have consistently championed the view that the rules governing global trade and investment must be made more fair, more inclusive and more responsive to the realities of the Global South.

This visit presents us with an opportunity to re-imagine a world of opportunities anchored by our shared values and vision.

As Team South Africa, we are keen to rebalance our trade by growing and diversifying South African exports to Brazil.

Both countries have an interest in improving market access and product coverage through the MERCOSUR-SACU Preferential Trade Agreement.

Among other things, we need to work on reducing trade friction by strengthening cooperation on trade remedies and resolving non-tariff constraints affecting priority products.

There is huge scope for advancing industrial cooperation in identified high-impact sectors.

These sectors include biofuels, defence, agro-processing, aerospace, energy, pharmaceuticals, advanced manufacturing and automotive.

These cooperation should include technology transfer and skills development.

We want to position South Africa as Brazil’s gateway into African markets under the African Continental Free Trade Area, and to position Brazil as South Africa’s gateway into Latin America.

Many South African companies have operations in Brazil. These include companies like Sasol, MTN, Naspers, FNB, Aspen Holdings, Grindrod, Standard Bank, AngloGold Ashanti and others.

Brazilian companies such as Petrobras, Embraer, Marcopolo SA have operations in South Africa.

We welcome the establishment by Embraer of an aviation training academy at OR Tambo International Airport, building South African aerospace talent and embedding our country in a global aviation value chain.

Marcopolo has invested in automotive manufacturing in the Gauteng province, contributing assembly capacity and workforce development.

The Brazilian industrial engineering group WEG has built a manufacturing and distribution presence that serves South Africa’s mining, energy and water sectors.

The foundation for greater trade and investment is in place.

Within BRICS, we have both championed development-oriented reform of the international financial architecture.

Within IBSA, we have demonstrated that South–South cooperation can deliver real outcomes in health, agriculture, science and education.

In the G20, South Africa has built on the momentum of Brazil’s distinguished Presidency in 2024, advancing shared priorities of inclusive growth, climate finance and fairer trade rules.

We have the foundation of a preferential trade agreement, the MERCOSUR-SACU Preferential Trade Agreement, covering more than a thousand tariff lines.

We see this agreement as a platform with much greater potential than has yet been realised.

We are eager to work with our Brazilian partners to expand its product coverage and increase its use within the business community.

South Africa is open for business.

We both have the policies, infrastructure and financial and technical tools to make it happen.

Our Industrial Development Corporation and the Export Credit Insurance Corporation of South Africa are in the room.

They are available to support a joint financing fund instrument targeting large scale infrastructure projects in manufacturing, biofuel, transport and energy.

Both countries have sound technical standards regulators and agencies.

There is therefore good opportunity for technical exchanges in the field of standards, accreditation, specification and conformity assessments.
Agreements have been signed. Now is the time to accelerate implementation.

To Brazilian executives who are considering where to deploy capital and build partnerships in the decade ahead, South Africa is not simply a market of 63 million people.

South Africa is the gateway to a continent of 1.4 billion people, integrated through the African Continental Free Trade Area into a single market with a combined GDP approaching $4 trillion.

Our main ports – Durban, Cape Town and Richards Bay – are among the busiest in the southern hemisphere.

Our financial system is the most sophisticated on the African continent.

Our logistics infrastructure, legal framework and depth of skilled human capital together provide a competitive advantage.

South Africa and Brazil are not simply trading partners.

We are fellow architects of a more equitable international order.

At a time when multilateralism faces real pressure, when the rules governing international trade are in flux, when the voices of the Global South risk being marginalised, our partnership carries a greater significance.

Let our economic partnership be the living expression of that shared political purpose.

When South Africa and Brazil trade more, when we invest in each other’s economies, when we build value chains that span the South Atlantic, we are not merely creating jobs and generating returns.

We are demonstrating that the Global South can shape its own prosperity.

I am here today with a business delegation representing South Africa’s most capable export and investment-ready companies across aerospace, mining, chemicals, agro-processing, pharmaceuticals, energy, defence and advanced manufacturing.

They have made this journey not as observers, but as partners ready to build.

As I look around this room at the companies, the entrepreneurs, the investors and the decision-makers who have made the journey to be here I see something powerful.

I see two nations choosing partnership over isolation. Cooperation over competition.

In closing, I invite you all to join us at the South Africa Investment Conference in Johannesburg on the 31st of March 2026, not simply as guests, but as partners in building a future of shared prosperity between our nations.

The door to South Africa is open. And the time to invest and grow together is now.

I thank you.
