Doha | February 2, 2026

The State of Qatar affirms that the opening of the Rafah land border crossing in southern Gaza to the movement of Palestinians represents a step in the right direction toward addressing the tragic conditions faced by civilians, particularly in the humanitarian and health sectors.

Strengthening Public Health Security at South Africa’s Borders: First Frontline FETP Cohort Graduates

Source: APO

.

The World Health Organization (WHO), in collaboration with the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), the National Department of Health (NDoH), and the Border Management Authority (BMA) successfully concluded South Africa’s first ever Field Epidemiology Training Programme (FETP) for Points of Entry (PoE) Frontline staff from 26–30 January 2026 in Johannesburg. This inaugural cohort marks a historic advancement in national border health surveillance and frontline detection capacities.

“This ceremony marks more than the completion of a training programme; it represents an important step forward in strengthening South Africa’s public health security—your journey has been both demanding and transformative.” — Ms. Shenaaz El-Halabi, WHO Representative.

This first of its kind initiative was designed to strengthen capacity for outbreak detection, surveillance and rapid response to public health threats at PoE and across provinces. The twelve weeks training followed a rigorous cycle that began with curriculum adaptation to suit PoE nature of work and staffing in October 2025 and included three workshops, two phases of fieldwork and sustained mentorship from WHO and NICD Technical Officers. The full cycle ran from 3 November 2025 to 30 January 2026.

Broadly, participants completed modules covering POE surveillance, traveler screening, reporting pathways and International Health Regulations (IHR) obligations, complemented by applied epidemiology projects, real-time site assessments and field based exercises. The PoE FETP curriculum covered foundational epidemiology, border health surveillance, data management and analysis, emergency preparedness, and full outbreak investigation skills. It also built strong competencies in applied epidemiology through case studies, problem analysis, laboratory linkages, scientific writing, communication, and preparation of documentation through group and individual work.

Speaking on the importance of mentorship and frontline vigilance, the NICD Director of South African FETP and AFENET Board Chair, Dr. Lazarus Kuonza, reminded the cohort:

“Your role at our borders is vital—every alert you detect and every decision you make protects the entire nation. Continue mentoring others, because strengthening each colleague strengthens South Africa’s first line of defense against cross border disease threats.”

The NDoH Chief Director for Environmental Health and Port Health Services, Ms. Aneliswa Cele as the leader who envisions the future of PoE capacity, emphasized the need to build on this achievement: “Let us not end here — we need to expand this training to more officials and integrate the skills gained into routine surveillance and response functions at Points of Entry. Let us not lose the momentum we have started.” Her message reinforces the commitment to sustained capacity building within border environments.

Echoing this forward focused vision, Ms. Funeka Bongweni, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of the BMA, highlighted the sector’s long-term aspirations:

“From this work we want to see a growing contribution to the body of knowledge for Ports of Entry—this is only the beginning in laying a strong foundation.”

As South Africa’s first POE FETP frontline cohort, graduates are now equipped to enhance routine surveillance, improve early detection and reporting, support outbreak investigations and contribute to future training cycles through mentorship.

WHO, NDoH, NICD and BMA congratulate the pioneering cohort and extend appreciation to all facilitators, mentors and partners whose dedication made this milestone possible. Together, we advance towards a more resilient South Africa, capable of detecting and responding to public health threats at every point of entry.

This milestone was made possible through the Pandemic Fund-supported project.

Turning Plans into Protection: Improving Capacity for Better Leprosy Case Management and Mass Drug Administration in Limpopo Province of South Africa

Source: APO

.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) Country Office for South Africa in collaboration with the National Department of Health (NDoH) and the Limpopo Provincial Department of Health, conducted an integrated Leprosy Case Management and Mass Drug Administration (MDA) Training Workshop in Tzaneen, Limpopo Province, from 26 to 28 January 2026.

The workshop formed part of South Africa’s efforts to advance the control and elimination of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), in line with the WHO NTD Roadmap 2021–2030 and Sustainable Development Goal target 3.3.

While leprosy prevalence in South Africa remains low, sporadic cases continue to occur, underscoring the need for sustained capacity in early detection, effective treatment, and prevention of disability. In parallel, schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiases (STH) remain endemic in several provinces, particularly affecting school-aged children and underserved communities. As the country prepares to scale up MDA using WHO-donated medicines, strengthening provincial and district readiness is critical.

The three-day workshop focused on improving technical and operational capacity for leprosy diagnosis and case management, promoting stigma reduction and referral pathways, and strengthening planning and implementation for safe and effective MDA. Participants also worked on developing provincial and district microplans to support programme rollout.

The workshop had 70 multi-disciplinary participants, which included provincial and district health officials, clinicians, environmental health practitioners, pharmacists, and programme managers. Technical facilitation was provided by WHO experts, the National Department of Health, academic institutions, The Leprosy Mission South Africa and the National Institute of Communicable Diseases. Mr Patrick Hlungwani from the National Department of Health emphasised the need to strengthen leprosy surveillance and reinforce multisectoral stakeholder collaboration to ensure the successful implementation of the MDA.

Dr Dhruv Pandey, Medical Officer, Tropical and Vector Borne Diseases Multicounty Assignment Team working with WHO in Southern Africa, underscored the urgency by saying that: “Schistosomiasis and STH control require sustained, multi-sectoral commitment. Integrating MDA into existing platforms is essential to reach vulnerable populations efficiently, in line with the WHO NTD Roadmap.”

The workshop strengthened coordination, readiness, and technical capacity, contributing to South Africa’s broader commitment to equitable access to NTD prevention and care, and coinciding with preparations for the World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day.

Together, these efforts highlight South Africa’s continued leadership in advancing the prevention, control and elimination of neglected tropical diseases.

Oando Reports Profit-After-Tax Up 10% to ₦241.3 billion as Upstream Production Rises 32% in FY 2025

Source: APO

.

Oando PLC (www.OandoPLC.com), Africa’s leading indigenous energy solutions provider, has published its unaudited results for the full year ended 31 December 2025. The company announced a 32% year-on-year increase in production by its upstream business, averaging 32,482 boepd. This growth was driven by a 36% increase in crude oil production to 11,269 bopd, a 24% increase in gas production to 19,982 boepd, and a 715% increase in NGL production to 1,231 bpd.

The Group attributed the production growth to the full-year consolidation of the NAOC JV interest, improved operational uptime resulting from the reactivation of previously constrained wells, and targeted infrastructure upgrades across operated assets.

Oando reported a 10% increase in profit after tax to ₦241.3 billion compared to ₦220.1 billion in 2024, supported by higher upstream production, impairment reversals, and favourable tax adjustments. However, revenue declined 21% to ₦3.21 trillion from ₦4.09trillion in 2024, while gross profit decreased 82% year-on-year to ₦27.8 billion, down from ₦155.9 billion in 2024. These declines in earnings reflect the Company’s change in revenue mix as it scaled back high-turnover, lower-margin refined-product trading in favour of higher-margin crude and gas trading opportunities, as well as the impact of non-cash items.

Commenting on the full year-end 2025 unaudited results, Group Chief Executive, Oando PLC, Wale Tinubu, CON, said, “2025 was a year of relentless execution as we successfully transitioned from the integration of the NAOC Joint Venture into operational delivery.

Over the year under review, we reinforced asset integrity, strengthened security across our operating areas, and materially improved uptime, delivering a 32% year-on-year increase in total production. Operated Joint Venture production averaged approximately 80,545 boepd, translating to 32,482 boepd net to Oando, alongside a 30% increase in crude oil liftings and a 59% increase in gas sales volumes.

Building on this foundation, we launched our development drilling programme with the successful completion and start-up of the Obiafu-44 gas-condensate well. This well represents the first execution milestone within a phased 36-well development programme, designed to restore field deliverability, unlock incremental production and advance the Group’s medium-term growth objectives.

Within its trading business, the Group recorded a 42% increase year-on-year in crude oil cargos traded, rising to 26 crude oil cargos (29.4 MMbbl) compared to 21 cargos (20.7 MMbbl) traded in 2024. During the period, Oando deliberately paused premium motor spirit (PMS) trading in response to structural changes in Nigeria’s domestic downstream landscape. While this rebalancing resulted in a short-term reduction in reported earnings, it aligns with the Group’s longer-term focus on margin quality and capital efficiency.

In our downstream trading business, we responded decisively to evolving market dynamics by deliberately rebalancing our portfolio away from gasoline importation toward higher-margin crude and gas opportunities. We expanded global exports and leveraged structured offtake and pre-export financing arrangements to support liquidity, cash-flow resilience, and effective production monetization for our clients,”  added Tinubu.

The period under review showcases the Company’s transition from asset integration following the acquisition to a decisive assumption of operatorship, evidenced by strong upstream performance. Capital expenditure increased significantly from 2024, with higher investment in upstream development, facility integrity, and infrastructure optimisation. This investment is strategic; production growth and increased revenue depend on these foundational capabilities being in place, and more importantly, it is evidence that the company is postured correctly for the future.

In line with its group-wide optimisation strategy, the Company realised $17.7 million in cost savings across key operating inputs through disciplined contract optimisation. During the period, retained earnings returned to a positive position, reflecting non-cash intra-group balance sheet realignments associated with ongoing capital restructuring. Collectively, these developments enhance the Company’s financial resilience and position it to deliver sustainable, long-term value as it enters its next phase of growth.

Looking ahead, Tinubu remarked “With operational control firmly embedded and the foundations for growth clearly established, our focus is on the diligent execution of our development programme to accelerate production growth, strengthen cash generation and enhance long-term value creation. As we enter 2026, we will continue to allocate capital prudently, deepen operational resilience and build on the momentum achieved.
