The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has been following with concern the situation in Niger following the serious events that occurred in Niamey during the night of 28 to 29 August 2026, marked by armed clashes and attacks against several sensitive sites in the capital, resulting in casualties and significant material damage.
The Chairperson of the Commission strongly condemns the use of violence and any attempt to seize power by force. He calls on all actors to exercise restraint and to safeguard the security of the population and the stability of the country.
The Chairperson of the Commission extends his condolences to the families of the victims and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured during these events.
The Chairperson of the Commission reaffirms the African Union’s commitment to standing with the people of Niger in support of peace, stability and national cohesion. He further reiterates the African Union’s readiness to support efforts towards the restoration of constitutional order, in accordance with the relevant instruments of the African Union.
The Chairperson of the Commission will continue to closely monitor developments in Niger and reaffirms the African Union’s readiness to contribute to efforts aimed at promoting peace and stability in Niger and across the Sahel region.
