President Ramaphosa clears Adv Andrew Chauke to continue as DPP after inquiry

President Cyril Ramaphosa has cleared Gauteng South Director of Public Prosecutions Adv Andrew Chauke to continue in office after an independent panel of inquiry found no basis to conclude that he was unfit to hold the position. 

The Presidency announced on Thursday that President Ramaphosa had informed Adv Chauke that he had been exonerated by the Nkabinde Panel of Enquiry, which was established to probe his fitness to hold office.

President Ramaphosa established the enquiry on 29 September 2025 in terms of Section 12(6)(a) of the National Prosecuting Authority Act of 1998.

The enquiry was mandated to investigate and determine whether Adv Chauke was fit and proper to continue holding office in light of serious allegations relating to his fitness and propriety.

President Ramaphosa placed Adv Chauke on suspension with effect from 20 July 2025, pending the finalisation of the enquiry.

The panel, chaired by Justice Baaitse Elizabeth Nkabinde, considered extensive oral evidence, documentary evidence, expert opinions, witness statements and legal submissions before reaching its findings.

According to the Presidency, the panel found that there was no credible evidence upon which it could conclude that Adv Chauke had taken prosecutorial decisions as alleged in respect of the Cato Manor matter, or that he had acted unlawfully in the performance of his coordination functions.

The panel also found that Adv Chauke’s decision to provisionally withdraw the murder and related charges against former Crime Intelligence head General Richard Mdluli, and to refer the matter to an inquest, was not irrational.

“In view of these and other findings that exonerate Adv Chauke, President Ramaphosa is satisfied that there is no basis upon which to conclude that Adv Chauke is unfit to hold office as Director of Public Prosecutions,” the Presidency said.

The President thanked Adv Chauke for his cooperation throughout the enquiry process and expressed confidence that the conclusion of the matter would enable him to continue carrying out his constitutional and statutory responsibilities with dedication and integrity in service of the National Prosecuting Authority and the nation.

President Ramaphosa also reiterated his appreciation to enquiry chairperson Justice Nkabinde, assisted by Adv Elizabeth Baloyi-Mere SC and Attorney Matshego Ramagaga, for the manner in which they undertook their task. – SAnews.gov.za

L’Église en Afrique lance les préparatifs de l’Assemblée ecclésiale de 2028 au plan continental

En prévision de l’Assemblée ecclésiale de l’Église en 2028, le Symposium des Conférences Épiscopales d’Afrique et de Madagascar (SCEAM) (www.SECAM.org) organise, du 3 au 5 août 2026, à Addis-Abeba, en Éthiopie, le premier séminaire préparatoire sur le thème « L’Église synodale en Afrique : cheminement vers l’Assemblée ecclésiale de 2028 ».

Réunissant des responsables de l’Église catholique, des théologiens, des agents pastoraux et des représentants des conférences épiscopales et des institutions ecclésiales de toute l’Afrique et de ses îles, ce séminaire de deux jours marque le début de la préparation continentale de l’Église en Afrique pour l’Assemblée ecclésiale de l’Église en 2028. S’appuyant sur le processus synodal mondial (2021-2024), cette rencontre sera l’occasion de faire le bilan de l’expérience synodale sur le continent, de discerner les priorités futures et de renforcer la contribution de l’Afrique au cheminement de l’Église universelle vers une Église plus synodale et missionnaire.

Ce séminaire est une opportunité pour une écoute attentive, pour évaluer les fruits déjà visibles et discerner ensemble comment Dieu appelle l’Église en Afrique à servir à la fois le continent et l’Église universelle.

La rencontre s’articulera autour de cinq objectifs clés : évaluer le processus synodal en Afrique ; réfléchir aux dons que l’Église en Afrique offre à l’Église universelle ; identifier les expressions émergentes de la synodalité missionnaire ; partager les expériences et les bonnes pratiques régionales ; et contribuer à l’élaboration d’un document de travail continental qui guidera le cheminement de l’Afrique vers l’Assemblée ecclésiale de 2028.

Les participants s’engageront dans la prière, le dialogue spirituel, des sessions plénières et des travaux de groupes favorisant le discernement communautaire et la recherche de consensus. Le programme comprendra des présentations sur la feuille de route mondiale et continentale pour les Assemblées ecclésiales 2027-2028, des témoignages de conférences épiscopales régionales et d’initiatives ecclésiales, ainsi que des sessions collaboratives visant à identifier des priorités concrètes pour l’Église en Afrique.

Cette rencontre aboutira à des recommandations clés et à un projet de document continental qui orientera les prochaines étapes du cheminement synodal africain et contribuera à la préparation de l’Assemblée ecclésiale de 2028.

Le Symposium des Conférences épiscopales d’Afrique et de Madagascar (SCEAM) organise la première Conférence continentale sur l’éducation catholique en Afrique

Le Symposium des Conférences épiscopales d’Afrique et de Madagascar (SCEAM) (www.SECAM.org) tiendra sa première Conférence continentale sur l’éducation catholique en Afrique du 6 au 8 août 2026 à Addis-Abeba, en Éthiopie, sur le thème : « Renforcer l’éducation catholique pour un développement humain intégral en Afrique ».

La Conférence réunira plus de 100 participants, parmi lesquels des évêques en charge de l’éducation, des représentants d’universités catholiques, des commissions nationales pour l’éducation catholique, des congrégations religieuses, des experts en éducation, des chercheurs et des partenaires.

Organisée en réponse au mandat de la 20e Assemblée plénière du SCEAM, qui s’est tenue à Kigali, au Rwanda, en juillet 2025, la Conférence vise à renforcer la collaboration continentale et à définir une orientation stratégique pour l’éducation catholique, catalyseur d’évangélisation, de développement humain intégral et de transformation sociale durable en Afrique et dans ses îles. Le programme comprendra des allocutions d’ouverture, des tables rondes d’experts, des travaux de groupes thématiques et des séances plénières axées sur les priorités clés de l’éducation catholique. Les discussions porteront sur l’identité catholique, le leadership et la gouvernance, la formation des enseignants, la viabilité financière, la transformation numérique et l’intelligence artificielle, les universités et la recherche catholiques, la protection de l’enfance, la responsabilité environnementale et les réponses innovantes aux nouveaux défis éducatifs.

L’un des principaux résultats de la conférence sera l’élaboration d’une feuille de route continentale pour l’éducation catholique à l’horizon 2026-2031, définissant les priorités stratégiques et les recommandations pratiques à l’attention des établissements d’enseignement catholiques du continent. Les participants poursuivront également les discussions sur la création de la Commission du SCEAM pour l’éducation, conçue comme une structure continentale permanente chargée de coordonner les initiatives en matière d’éducation catholique en Afrique.

PST levels in Saldanha Bay shellfish fall below safety limits

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment has advised the public that paralytic shellfish toxin levels in mussels and oysters from monitored production areas in the Saldanha Bay Aquaculture Development Zone have dropped below the regulatory safety limits for human consumption. 

The latest monitoring results confirmed that shellfish from these approved areas are within safe levels and may be harvested, marketed and consumed, provided they remain compliant with the official shellfish monitoring and control programme.

The programme is implemented in line with local and international standards.

The department said it will continue to monitor toxin levels and issue further advice should conditions change. – SAnews.gov.za

Foi realizada com sucesso uma transacção transfronteiriça de comércio de combustível (gasóleo) no valor de 5,3 milhões de USD com o apoio do Africa Trade Gateway (ATG), o ecossistema de comércio digital emblemático do Banco Africano de Exportação e Importação (Afreximbank) (www.Afreximbank.com), demonstrando o valor e a eficácia do Gateway na dinamização do comércio africano.

A transacção, na qual a importadora de combustível do Zimbabwe, a Witeva Trading, adquiriu um carregamento de gasóleo junto de um importante comerciante e fornecedor de matérias-primas da Suíça, com a Innbucks Microbank Ltd. a participar como instituição financeira emissora local e o Afreximbank a prestar apoio na confirmação ao abrigo da estrutura de financiamento comercial acordada, demonstra como as empresas africanas podem tirar proveito de um ecossistema interligado para identificar oportunidades, aceder a financiamento e realizar o comércio internacional de forma mais eficiente.

Une transaction commerciale transfrontalière de 5,3 millions de dollars US portant sur du carburant (gazole) a été réalisée avec succès grâce au soutien de l’Africa Trade Gateway (ATG) — l’écosystème numérique de commerce phare de facilitation des échanges de la Banque Africaine d’Import-Export (Afreximbank) (www.Afreximbank.com) — démontrant ainsi la valeur et l’efficacité de cette plateforme pour dynamiser le commerce africain.

Cette opération, qui a permis à l’importateur zimbabwéen de carburant Witeva Trading de s’approvisionner en gazole auprès d’un important négociant et fournisseur de matières premières basé en Suisse, a impliqué Innbucks Microbank Ltd. en tant qu’institution financière émettrice locale et Afreximbank pour la confirmation de l’opération selon une structure de financement du commerce convenue. United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) patrol to Ezo reassures struggling communities they are not alone

For the people of Ezo, in South Sudan’s far western corner, the arrival of a helicopter is more than the sound of rotating blades—it is a reminder they have not been forgotten.

Bordering the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ezo is rich in fertile land but cut off by poor roads and vulnerable to cross-border insecurity.

Today, a United Nations Dynamic Air Patrol is bringing military and civilian peacekeepers closer to communities—listening to concerns, assessing security, and strengthening local partnerships.

Agriculture is the backbone of life in Ezo, yet many families remain trapped in poverty despite the area’s agricultural potential. For many women, peace must also bring economic opportunity.

“As we are staying here, farming work is too much. We are currently harvesting groundnuts. The level of poverty is too much here,” explains Ezo resident, Queen Eunice. “People are tired and struggling with farming as can be seen and there is no support.”

Poor roads remain one of the community’s greatest challenges. During the rainy season, Ezo is often cut off, restricting trade, slowing development, and limiting humanitarian access.

“Communities are doing their activities like farming and schooling,” says Ezo local authority member, Henry Zinaro. ” The road to Ezo is very bad and it is slowing down the economic activities in the county.”

UN peacekeepers say Ezo’s fertile land offers enormous potential, but greater investment in farming, water infrastructure, and basic services is needed to turn that potential into lasting livelihoods.

“We realized that the major activity that can develop Ezo is agriculture. If they receive agricultural tools and machinery, they can cultivate more, produce enough food, improve the economy, and generate more income,” says UNMISS Military Observer, Djamilla Pelagie Balakwe. “Maintaining boreholes will also improve livelihoods and strengthen the protection of civilians.”

Ezo’s border location also leaves communities exposed to armed groups moving across porous frontiers. The presence of internally displaced people and refugees makes early warning and community-led protection vital to preventing violence.

Gina leads National Science Month career expo in KZN

Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Nomalungelo Gina, will lead a career expo in uMkhanyakude District, KwaZulu-Natal, as part of efforts to expand access to science, technology and innovation (ST&I) opportunities for learners and young people in one of the province’s rural districts.

The expo, held at the Manguzi Sports Centre in the Umhlabuyalingana Local Municipality on 24 July 2026, forms part of National Science Month, which Gina launched earlier this month at the Vaal University of Technology.

National Science Month is an initiative of the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation, implemented through the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement to promote public interest in science, technology and innovation and demonstrate their impact on everyday life.

The event will bring together government departments, science councils, higher education institutions, and other stakeholders to provide learners and out-of-school youth with information on career opportunities, bursaries, science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)-related study fields, training pathways, and future-oriented skills.

It will feature interactive exhibitions and demonstrations that will also give attendees an opportunity to engage with science and technology through practical, accessible and exciting ways.

The Department of Communications and Digital Technologies, which is conducting outreach activities in the district as part of the implementation of the Broadcast Digital Migration Programme, will also participate in the career expo, while Gina will visit households where the analogue to digital switch is being rolled out. – SAnews.gov.za

Police MINMEC to focus on national policing priorities

Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia will chair the second statutory meeting of the Minister and Members of the Executive Council (MINMEC) for Police in White River, Mpumalanga, this weekend.

The two-day meeting, taking place on 24 and 25 July 2026, aims to strengthen coordination within the police service and enhance cooperation between the three spheres of government on matters relating to safety and security in the country.

Held under the theme: “Advancing a National Reset Agenda for Policing”, the meeting will review progress on implementing the nine MINMEC priorities adopted during the sitting on 6 March 2026.

The priorities seek to improve crime prevention and policing, with a particular focus on combating gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), reducing firearm-related crime, and increasing public trust in the police. 

According to the Ministry, the nine priorities form the foundation of a national reset agenda that will guide the strategic direction of policing in South Africa. –SAnews.gov.za
