Stokvel members urged to exercise caution ahead of festive season

As the festive season approaches and stokvels and savings clubs prepare for their annual payouts, the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Northern Cape has urged community members to exercise caution when accessing, transporting and distributing their hard-earned savings.

The festive season traditionally results in increased cash withdrawals and the movement of larger amounts of money, creating opportunities for criminals to target unsuspecting members of the public.

Stokvel members may become vulnerable to robberies, theft and other opportunistic crimes, particularly when cash withdrawals and payout arrangements become predictable.

The SAPS appealed to stokvel members and organisers to take proactive measures to safeguard their savings and personal safety.

The following safety measures are strongly recommended:
•    Where possible, avoid withdrawing or carrying large amounts of cash.
•    Consider safer alternatives such as electronic transfers directly into members’ bank accounts.
•    Avoid withdrawing or distributing large sums of money at predictable times, locations or through routine arrangements.
•    Do not disclose information relating to stokvel payouts, cash withdrawals, meeting venues or distribution arrangements to strangers or unnecessary third parties.
•    Remain vigilant when visiting banks, ATMs and other financial institutions, and never accept assistance from strangers when conducting transactions.
•    Where large amounts of money must be handled, avoid travelling alone and consider making appropriate security arrangements.
•    Be alert to individuals or vehicles that may appear to be following you after visiting a bank or ATM. If you suspect that you are being followed, do not travel directly to your home. Proceed to the nearest police station or a safe, busy location and immediately contact the police.
•    Report suspicious persons, vehicles or activities to the police without delay.
•    Avoid displaying large amounts of cash in public or discussing stokvel savings, payouts or financial arrangements on social media platforms.

Stokvel organisers are further encouraged to engage with their respective financial institutions to explore safer and more secure methods of collecting contributions, depositing funds and distributing payouts, thereby reducing the need to handle large amounts of cash.

The police cautioned that criminals may exploit predictable routines and publicly available information to identify and target potential victims.

“Stokvel members are therefore encouraged to maintain confidentiality regarding their financial arrangements and to remain vigilant throughout the payout period.

“The SAPS in the Northern Cape will continue to conduct crime prevention and high-visibility operations across the province during the festive season. However, community cooperation remains essential in preventing crime and ensuring safer communities,” said the police. – SAnews.gov.za
