Eskom on its way to ending load reduction

Eskom’s load reduction eradication campaign has now reached more than half of its intended targets, with more than 880 000 households returned to normal supply.

The power utility launched a phased programme to eliminate load reduction by 2027.

“About 886 717 customers across South Africa are no longer impacted, representing about 52% of targeted households, with full elimination achieved in the Northern and Western Cape.

“The programme targets 971 feeders and will benefit approximately 1.69 million customers across all provinces, out of Eskom’s total customer base of 7.2 million,” Eskom said.

The programme’s key interventions include:

  • Rollout of smart meters.
  • Integration of Distributed Energy Resources.
  • Expansion of Free Basic Electricity (FBE) support.

Eskom has already deployed 1 798 091 smart meters nationwide since inception.

“Of these, 409 011 meters have been installed on load reduction feeders, representing approximately 23% of deployments in high-priority areas.

“This targeted rollout is helping to ease grid pressure, while enabling customers to access real-time consumption data and exercise greater control over their energy usage.

“The rollout is deliberately focused on high-loss areas affected by illegal connections, meter bypassing, overloaded infrastructure and widespread electricity theft,” the power utility said.

Some 484 feeders have been removed from load reduction against Eskom’s planned target of 97, with the bulk of those in Gauteng.

In terms of the Free Basic Electricity (FBE) expansion programme, 571 589 customers have been registered.

“The FBE beneficiaries figure fluctuates monthly. The 571 589 figure reflects an 18% increase from the baseline of 485 000 customers and represents about 27% of the 2.1 million eligible customers.

“Eskom calls on communities to report illegal connections, use electricity responsibly, and protect infrastructure. Any illegal activity affecting Eskom’s infrastructure can be reported to the Eskom Crime Line on 0800 112 722 or via WhatsApp on 081 333 3323,” Eskom said.

Strong results

Meanwhile, the power utility continues to sustain improvements in the performance of the electricity system, despite increased winter demand.

“Since 16 May 2025, South Africa has recorded 399 consecutive days without interruptions to electricity supply, reflecting 100% system availability in meeting electricity demand.

“Continued gains in energy availability, together with a decline in unplanned outages and targeted network interventions, are reinforcing system stability and supporting consistent electricity supply to customers across the country,” the power utility stated.

Gains in the financial year-to-date include increased Energy Availability Factor, which has risen to 63.54%, a significant increase from the 58.08% recorded over the same period last year.

“This reflects sustained progress under Eskom’s turnaround strategy, including a 9.49% improvement [4.8GW] compared to the same period three years ago.

“These gains are underpinned by reduced unplanned outages and more consistent, reliable performance across the generation fleet,” Eskom said. – SAnews.gov.za

Standard Bank’s Deerosh Maharaj Joins African Mining Week (AMW) as Advisory Board Member

Source: APO – Report:

.

Deerosh Maharaj, Executive Head for Energy, Infrastructure and Mining, Standard Bank, has been appointed to the Advisory Board of African Mining Week (AMW) – The Most Influential Mining Conference in Africa.

Maharaj’s appointment underscores AMW’s commitment to leveraging the expertise of industry leaders to amplify its impact on Africa’s mining sector. Held under the theme Mining the Future: Unearthing Africa’s Full Mineral Value Chain from October 14–16 in Cape Town, AMW will unite African project developers and global investors under one roof, enhancing capital flows, required for the sustainable growth of the continent’s mining and energy sectors.

In his advisory role, Maharaj will provide strategic guidance on key themes and topics, engage with industry stakeholders, and promote participation among executives, investors and policymakers, ensuring comprehensive coverage of the critical issues shaping the continent’s mining landscape.

“Maharaj brings a wealth of experience in deal structuring, sustainable growth, and investment facilitation,” stated Rachelle Kasongo, Event Director, AMW. “His guidance will be crucial in aligning AMW 2026’s agenda with the real needs of the industry and in fostering partnerships that drive mining and energy sector development across Africa.”

With over 12 years’ experience at Standard Bank, Maharaj has extensive expertise in structuring deals and providing financial solutions across mining, energy and infrastructure sectors, supporting Africa’s local beneficiation agenda.

Under Maharaj’s leadership, Standard Bank provides comprehensive financial solutions to mining companies, including lending, working capital support, foreign exchange risk management, sustainability advisory and cross-border trade facilitation – services increasingly critical for operations spanning multiple jurisdictions.

In early 2026, the bank acted as co-mandated lead arranger and lender on a $130 million dual-currency financing package for Tharisa Minerals in South Africa. In Namibia, it is supporting Rosh Pinah Zinc’s RP2.0 mine expansion with a $150 million finance package. The bank also backs several renewable energy projects powering mining operations across South Africa, including the 475 MW Notsi Solar PV facility.

Amid rising demand for financing to unlock Africa’s full mining and energy potential, Maharaj’s expertise will be pivotal to the AMW agenda, strengthening partnerships between African project developers and financiers and driving increased investment flows.

Puppets, songs, games set to teach young children in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) about Ebola to tackle misinformation and protect families

Source: APO – Report:

.

Using puppets, songs, and musical statues, children as young as four in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are to be taught about Ebola in a new programme aiming to tackle misinformation, Ebola denial, and protect families.

Using puppets, songs, and musical statues, children as young as four in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are to be taught about Ebola in a new programme aiming to tackle misinformation, Ebola denial, and protect families, Save the Children said.

The series of play-based learning activities, developed by Save the Children, are to be rolled out across the DRC to increase children’s awareness of the virus and dispel myths and rumours in a bid to stem the spread of the DRC’s third worst Ebola outbreak on record.

Fear and misinformation have contributed to attacks on health workers and treatment centres and to declining school attendance in parts of the DRC, said Save the Children, with parents saying they were concerned about children contracting the illness in class or the playground.

With end-of-year exams now taking place across the DRC, Save the Children with the Education Cluster has also launched new guidance for schools and teachers on how to prevent the risk of Ebola exposure, promoting handwashing, screening at entrances to examination centres, and quick treatment for Ebola-like symptoms.

Alfred*, 40, a schoolteacher in the DRC, said fear has spread among children in his classrooms nearly as rapidly as misinformation in communities about the latest strain of Ebola, Bundibugyo, which has claimed about 232 lives so far among 896 cases, including at least 26 children, according to the Ministry of Health.

This has left him with nearly empty classrooms, with some children hiding in bushes and end-of-year exams being rushed or rescheduled. He is also concerned about stigma and discrimination as children from highly affected areas are excluded by classmates but remains committed to raising awareness.

Alfred said rumours about the outbreak, that was officially declared on 15 May, spread through “battery‑less radios” where people circulate false information through conversations and social media resulting in denial of Ebola and distrust in healthcare and even schools.

He said: “[The rumour is that] once a person is infected with this disease, they go to the hospital. From there, only corpses return home. So, this also creates panic among people. That is why people say it is as if they inject water into the bodies of patients, and that is what kills them.”

One of Alfred’s students, 13-year-old Alice*, who dreams of becoming a doctor, said hearing that many people have died from Ebola makes her feel very scared and sad, especially as many children are unable to attend school.

She told Save the Children team in Ituri, the worst hit area in the eastern DRC: “Children cannot come to school because of the disease.  When I hear what people are saying, they say many have died from Ebola. They tell us to protect ourselves and keep our distance. It makes me very scared, very worried”

“When talking about Ebola, some people refuse to believe it exists, they say it is a lie, while others accept it.”

With training from Save the Children, along with local health and education authorities, teachers including Alfred have integrated Ebola awareness into daily school life, educating students about the nature of the virus and prevention measure.

As part of its Ebola response in Ituri, Save the Children has provided 33 schools with complete infection prevention and control kits including thermal scanners, handwashing devices, chlorine, hygiene equipment among other items.

Dr Babou Rukengeza, Save the Children’s Ebola Response Lead in the DRC, said:

“Unfortunately, we are seeing significant community resistance to prevention and treatment measure, as case numbers rise. Some families are refusing to allow health workers to disinfect their homes after a case is suspected, and we have also seen unfortunate cases where people with Ebola have chosen to leave isolation facilities.

“We know that attacks on treatment centres and health workers reflect tensions between public health measures and community understanding of Ebola, how it spreads and how it needs to be treated.

“We understand people are fearful, and we need to do everything we can to help communities understand why certain prevention and response measures are in place.

“While Ebola is primarily a health crisis, it also has significant impacts on education systems, disrupting learning and affecting children’s wellbeing. We are working to change that through these programmes, using schools to help prevent the spread of Ebola and serve as a critical platform for response as well as a safe, inclusive space for children.”

In the DRC since 1994, Save the Children partners with 13 local organisations, as well as international agencies and government authorities, to deliver life-saving support in health, nutrition, education, child protection, food security, and water, sanitation, and hygiene for children and their families.

Address by Deputy President Shipokosa Paulus Mashatile on the occasion of the China International Supply Chain Expo (CISCE), Shunyii Exhibition Centre, Beijing

Source: President of South Africa –

Chairman of the CCPIT, Mr Ren Hongbin;
Chinese Leaders, here present;
Secretary-General of the International Chamber of Commerce, Mr John Denton;
Chairman of CITIC Group, Mr Hua Xiguo;
Honourable Ministers and Deputy Ministers here Present;
Leaders of Industry and Commerce;
Distinguished Guests;

Good Morning,

I am honoured to address this distinguished gathering at the China International Supply Chain Expo at a time when global supply chains, trade patterns and industrial cooperation are undergoing profound transformation.

On behalf of the Government and people of the Republic of South Africa, I extend our sincere appreciation to the Government of the People’s Republic of China and the CCPIT for the gracious invitation to participate in this year’s Expo.

Our presence here today reflects South Africa’s unwavering commitment to deepening our comprehensive economic partnership with China, aimed at advancing trade, investment, and long-term industrial cooperation.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

We meet at a defining moment in the global economy. Geopolitical shifts, technological advancements, climate imperatives, and changing patterns of production are reshaping the architecture of global commerce. At the same time, countries and businesses are seeking greater resilience, diversification, decarbonisation and sustainability within global supply chains.

In this context, the China International Supply Chain Expo serves as an important platform to strengthen partnerships, rebuild confidence in global trade systems and promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth.

South Africa and China enjoy a deep and enduring Comprehensive Strategic Partnership founded on mutual respect, solidarity, and a shared vision for development. Our cooperation continues to expand through strong trade and investment ties, as well as through platforms such as BRICS, the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation and other multilateral engagements.

As we navigate this evolving global landscape, South Africa offers a compelling value proposition within international supply chains.

First, South Africa is an attractive investment destination, supported by sophisticated industrial capabilities, a world-class financial sector, and well-established logistics infrastructure. We remain committed to reforms aimed at improving the ease of doing business, accelerating infrastructure development, and strengthening industrial competitiveness, through the use of Artificial Intelligence (Al).

Second, South Africa is a reliable source of high-value products and critical inputs required for modern industries and the global energy transition. We are endowed with significant mineral resources, including platinum group metals, manganese, and chromium, while also offering world-class agricultural products, advanced manufacturing capabilities and growing strengths in services and digital trade.

A key objective of our engagement in Beijing is to expand the range and value of South African exports entering the Chinese market and to shift our trade relationship increasingly towards value-added manufactured goods.

Third, South Africa serves as a gateway to the African continent. Through the African Continental Free Trade Area, investors located in South Africa gain access to a market of more than 1.3 billion people. This presents significant opportunities for regional value chain development and industrial expansion across Africa.

We invite Chinese and international partners to work with us in positioning Africa not merely as a consumer market, but as a competitive production base, a sourcing destination, and an important node within global supply chains.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

An important pillar of our engagement is the implementation of the Framework Agreement on Economic Partnership for Shared Prosperity, or CADEPA, signed earlier this year by our respective trade ministers.

Its implementation is complemented by the zero-tariff preference scheme that came into effect on 1 May 2026, allowing qualifying South African exports to enter the Chinese market duty-free.

South Africa is therefore positioning itself as a reliable supply base for critical inputs, a destination for industrial beneficiation and an ideal partner for co-production.

We see significant opportunities for collaboration in three priority areas:

Firstly, agriculture and food systems. South Africa produces high-quality citrus, avocados, stone fruits, wines, and macadamia nuts, which now benefit from zero customs duties under the CADEPA framework. We encourage Chinese importers and distributors to establish long-term sourcing partnerships with South African producers.

Secondly, critical minerals and the green economy. South Africa possesses substantial reserves of platinum group metals and other strategic minerals required for fuel cells, renewable energy technologies, and energy storage solutions. We invite Chinese enterprises to explore opportunities for joint ventures, local beneficiation, and downstream manufacturing in South Africa.

Thirdly, advanced manufacturing, logistics and automotive value chains. South Africa’s industrial base offers attractive opportunities for component manufacturing, machinery production and export-oriented partnerships serving both domestic and African markets.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

As we shape the future of global supply chains, we must ensure that our partnerships remain inclusive and sustainable. Economic cooperation should contribute to job creation, skills development, industrial growth, environmental sustainability, and deliver tangible benefits for our people.

South Africa reaffirms its commitment to strengthening economic cooperation with China. We are determined to position our country as both a preferred destination for investment and a reliable source of value within global supply chains.

We are confident that this Expo will contribute to a new phase of practical cooperation, deeper industrial integration, and shared prosperity for all people.

I thank you, Xièxie.

African Electric Vehicle (EV) platform Spiro secures $55M additional backing from Chinese investor NewTrails Capital to boost electric mobility and energy infrastructure in Africa

Source: APO

  • With a fresh $55M million investment from Chinese growth-stage fund NewTrails Capital, Spiro consolidates backing from a powerful consortium of global institutional and impact investors and closes its last funding round to $270M.
  • As African economies push to reduce dependence on imported fuel, reinforce energy and industrial sovereignty and modernize urban transport systems, the record closing of this last round confirms global investors are increasingly turning to scalable EV infrastructure platforms and Spiro’s strong ambitions for the year to come.
  • Already operating across seven of Africa’s fastest-growing urban markets, Spiro will further accelerate the expansion of Spiro’s battery-swapping network, industrial footprint and next-generation electric vehicles (EV) infrastructure across high-growth African markets.

Spiro (https://www.Spironet.com), Africa’s leading electric vehicle (EV) and clean energy infrastructure platform, today announced the successful closing of its latest funding round at $270 million.

This milestone follows a newly finalized $55 million investment from NewTrails Capital, a prominent Chinese growth-stage investment fund focusing on emerging markets with strategic locations in Shanghai, Shenzhen and Nigeria.

Scaling Africa’s next-generation mobility and energy ecosystem

This capital injection positions Spiro among the continent’s most heavily backed Africa’s e-mobility and energy ecosystem.

Building on the support of long-standing institutional partners such as FEDA, Spiro’s latest equity round also draws global capital from Europe and Africa, Impact Fund Denmark, Equitane and FEDA, on top of the recent backing from Nithio and the Africa Go Green Fund.

“I would like to thank NewTrails Capital for believing in Spiro’s model and supporting our unique tech, energy and innovation journey. Having deployed 100,000 electric vehicles and 2,500 smart-swap stations across seven active markets, Spiro has firmly moved past the proof-of-concept phase. Partnering with NewTrail Capital’s deeply experienced team marks a powerful new chapter for Spiro as we prepare for the next steps of our pan-African and international expansion”, stated Gagan Gupta, Founder of Spiro and Chairman of Equitane.

Yufan Zhang, Founding Partner of NewTrails Capital, added:

“We believe Spiro is driving a profound “energy revolution” across mobility use cases in Africa. This represents not only a vast and highly imaginative market opportunity, but also the potential to grow into an infrastructure-like business that creates meaningful commercial, social, and environmental value.

In our view, Spiro’s core strengths lie in its deeply localized operating capabilities, vertically integrated supply chain, digitally enabled ecosystem, sound unit economics, and strong ability to scale rapidly. More importantly, Spiro has systematically integrated vehicles, batteries, energy replenishment, payments, and service networks into a solution that is truly tailored to the needs of African users, effectively addressing long-standing structural pain points in the local market.

As a Chinese fund committed to investing in Africa’s energy transition and green technology, we are also very encouraged to see Chinese supply chains and financing playing an increasingly important role in this process. Spiro is still a young company, and everything today is only the beginning. We look forward to continuing to fulfill our role as a long-term investor, contributing our resources and experience, growing together with Spiro, and helping accelerate Africa’s new energy transition.”,

This partnership will be instrumental to support Spiro’s current manufacturing and supply chain localisation effort on the continent in particular with Chinese suppliers.

Célébration de la Journée mondiale des réfugiés, 2026 : Le Bénin réaffirme son engagement pour une meilleure protection
